Hey, im trying to fix my friends computer but kind of got stuck. She got a "free" or not genuine version of windows XP. My question is how can i un install the un-genuine version of windows and reinstall a different version. Can I do a system restore or will that not work because it is still dealing with the same version/ key number. Or can i just press system restore and throw in another working key number when it asks. Also would a version of windows xp that is not genuine result in cd drive not working?

Even though that is a perfectly good method, I'd still recommend a complete reformat.

That installation is a torrent or a pirate copy, and who knows if 'other' code just happened to slip in there like a hidden keylogger or something else equally nasty. It might be a little more of a pain to do a fresh install, but I guarantee you'll worry less and probably have less trouble in the future.

put in the cd and reboot. it will ask you if you want to format or just upgrade(if it's a different version (ie home ->pro))
