Hey, im trying to fix my friends computer but kind of got stuck. She got a "free" or not genuine version of windows XP. My question is how can i un install the un-genuine version of windows and reinstall a different version. Can I do a system restore or will that not work because it is still dealing with the same version/ key number. Or can i just press system restore and throw in another working key number when it asks. Also would a version of windows xp that is not genuine result in cd drive not working?

Assuming you have purchased a legal copy of XP the following guide should work. Which I belive does not violate forum rules because it will only work with a LEGITIMATE KEY.

Even though that is a perfectly good method, I'd still recommend a complete reformat.
That installation is a torrent or a pirate copy, and who knows if 'other' code just happened to slip in there like a hidden keylogger or something else equally nasty. It might be a little more of a pain to do a fresh install, but I guarantee you'll worry less and probably have less trouble in the future. -
how do i do a fresh install then? Do I just Put the the legit copy of windows Xp in?
