    Hello, New to the forum.

Let me explain what I want to do, and maybe someone has an answer. I don't know if this is the right forum but it was the closest I could find to match my question.

I bought this laptop to do some secondary *stuff*. I don't go anywhere with it. But what I do use it for, is to monitor my surveillance cameras, and as a second option to view video on my TV.

I have my TV plugged in Via the HDMI port. I set windows to use the tv as the primary display. The whole goal here is to be able to have the tv be on, while the lid of the laptop is closed. But no matter what I do shutting the lid puts it in sleep mode, or hibernates. I CANNOT get it to ignore the action.

I've done the settings for 'closing lid' in the options and everything else I can find, but I can't seem to get this to work.

The reason I don't want the lid open is primary 2 things. 1. I don't want to wear the screen out sitting doing nothing for days. 2. My stinkin cats love LCD screens, and i can't keep them away from it. So what I do now, is put an object on the keyboard and close the lid on it. Which is enough. but I REALLY want to find a way to be able to completely close the lid and leave the system on. I am quite sure this is possible, as that's what happens with port replicators and docking stations.

    Any thoughts?

I'm assuming by changing the settings you mean the power options actions for power buttons and lid, lid close action? That should work.

Do you have any power management drivers or software installed that might have come bundled with the laptop? My Asus G53SW came with the power4gear power manager program, and I've noticed that whenever I reboot or come out of hibernate it switches my power plan from "High Performance" to "Power4Gear Balanced" (it also automatically switches to that if I unplug from AC). You might want to check and make sure nothing is resetting the power plan to another profile (or change all of the profiles to do nothing on the lid close action).

hi and thanks for the response.

yes, sorry that's what I meant, is in the power options.

The dell came with numerous apps, but I installed an SSD that I had just pulled from my desktop, so i installed Windows 7 from scratch and only installed the necessary drivers.

There's also no other profiles on the machine.

It's bizarre. i know what you're getting at but I did try that.

Are you on A13 BIOS? Drivers & Downloads | Dell United States,
I saw one "solution" where someone broke off the pin that is connected to the switch ... I have also seen this issue go unsolved with an ASUS running 7
Does it go to sleep / Hibernate immediately on lid close?

Before you installed the SSD were you able to close the lid as desired?

If none of this helps try clicking the Triangle to report post and ask a Moderator to move this to a Dell forum

Are you running dual displays? Or are the display settings configured to output only to the TV and to shut the laptop monitor off?

Just for assurance, make sure your power settings are set up similar to something like this (settings from my desktop PC):

Power State Example 1.jpg Power State Example 2.jpg Power State Example.jpg

After you set those settings, click Apply, then Ok, and then reboot. Check those settings on reboot and see if they're still intact or whether they reverted back.

If no go, make a new power plan and name it whatever you want, and use those same settings.

Actually That was it. I changed it to display only on the tv. and that stopped it from shutting off. I had no idea that would do it.

    Thanks!
