I have a Dell D620 laying around. Planning on getting a cheap 200Gig hard drive. Would like to dual boot Windows XP and Ubuntu 9.04.
Was thinking of partioning 120Gig for Windows and 80Gig for Ubuntu. Give or take. Where would I start? Which OS gets installed first? Do I have to do anything manually once they are both installed or is it all automatic?
Thanks.

Ever heard of search???
Instal XP first, then Linux.
You may want to have 3 partitions - one for XP, one for Linux, one for data - makes sharing files easier if you wanted too...
I believe Linux will need unpartitioned space for the installation. -
Search works almost as well as being able to read.
I asked about Ubuntu 9.04. Everywhere I've looked, its all the older OS's. Ubuntu 6, or Ubuntu 7.04, or Ubuntu whatever. I just want to make sure I can install 9.04 the same way web sites mention installing 6.06.
As a matter of fact, I found this web site...

If I can use the same insturctions for installing 9.04, I'm all set. -
Ubuntu has a partition manager on install so do XP first, then Linux
yes search is your friend: nbrsearch -
Never mind. Its not worth it.
Thanks for the help. -
u will need 4 partitions , and install xp 1st
-one for xp 20gb
-one for linux 10gb
-one for linux swap 5gb
-one for ur data (the big one ) you can access it on both linux and xp 165 gega
i think this will be a good combination
pm me if u need more info -
I tend to do 20-40 each for Windows and Linux, the rest for shared files. In some versions of Linux, the installer will take a large partition and make an extended partition with swap, root, and home. I have not used Ubuntu, so your millage might vary.
Install XP first. The Linux installer does a much better job of working with Windows than the other way around. -
It can get a little overwhelming sometimes for those wanting to keep it simple.
Hey marmaduke,
Here is a very simple set of guides for you to follow:
http://apcmag.com/popular_howtos.htm
Read through the descriptions and decide which OS you want to install first.
Good luck and have fun! -
