    Hi there,

I'm using Word 2003 and would like to know if there is any software that would prevent the user from being to copy my material and paste it into another medium or software. I'd like to use something other than the "read-only" feature in Word, since my friends have been able to open those documents and edit/cut them at will. Not sure why....

Try adobe, but I believe you may have to pay for the acrobat security functions.

You can always export to a picture or something, and hope they arent smart enough to ocr it.

Yeah, you can save it as a PDF and use Acrobat to change the security on it. You can make it so you need a password to edit, copy, or cut from it.

copy the document in paint . and the save the image. Take the image and paste it back in document.

    Alternately,

    go to print .
use microsoft document imaging writer as a printer. paste the file back in word.

P.S.No matter what happens you cannot prevent the document being copied.
Users may do print screen. you can make the task harder.

    Nimaro,

    Your suggestions are brilliant. But...

What I need, exactly, is for someone to be able to open the document, take their mouse and scroll over the text, but NOT be able to delete any portion of it.

That is the exact thing I need. For someone to be able READ it, SCROLL and SELECT it, but not DELETE any part of it. Is that possible?

    I appreciate all the help!

Why does it have to be a word doc? .pdf it for sure and you can read it, scroll, and no one can edit it.

I'm submitting it to a professor, but I do not want him to be able to fiddle around with the document for personal reasons. I want him to be able to scroll through it to check the word count, but not delete or move portions of the text.

I think a better restatement of my quesiton is this: "Is there a MARK AS FINAL or equivalent function in MS Word 2003?"

That seems to do precisely what I want in 07, but I'd like it to apply to both programs.

Print it out (and ideally sign it in ink) and hand in the paper.

"Before you share a final version of a document with other people, you can use the Mark as Final command to make the document read-only and communicate to other people that you are sharing a final version of the document. When a document is marked as final, its typing, editing commands, and proofing marks are disabled, and people who view the document cannot inadvertently change the document. The Mark as Final command is not a security feature. Anyone can edit a document that is marked as final by turning off Mark as Final."

I thought of this too, but thats for 2007 and it will need to be as 2003 format. I don't have 03 installed anymore to test that out on, but that is definitely what he is looking for.

Tools -> Protect Document -> Allow only this type of editing -> No changes -> Yes, start enforcing -> (put in password) -> OK

edit: people can still copy it though. but this is pretty much what "mark as final" in 2007 does afaik
