Hey, I found this website while searching around about information regarding Notebook Hardware Control.
I own a Toshiba M45 S331. About a week ago, it started shutting itself down randomly. I soon learned this was due to overheating.
At my brother's advice, I installed NHC (and Framework 2.0) to help this problem. At first, I had no problems.
But after a while, I kept on receiving errors stating "Windows Delayed Write Failure" followed by some file...not the same one each time, though some are re-occuring. The messages don't come up all the time, but sometimes they come at 4 at a time, but then I don't have to deal with them for a while.
Also, my notebook was slower than usual. The time it took to boot up when I turned it on was noticeably longer than before. Also, it slows down when I'm doing things on it, such as if I open a couple folders while my WinAmp is on, my songs slow down or become choppy, and overall, it is just slower.
I uninstalled both programs I had put on (NHC and framework), but my computer was still slow, and I could feel it heating up again. I decided to put the programs back on, just because if there is no difference, I might as well not have a hot laptop.
My questions are this:
-Has anyone heard of Windows Delayed Write Failure programs associated with NHC? [I did research on this type of Windows error and not any of the causes seem to relate to what's going on with my laptop]
-What could be causing my laptop to perform so slowly? [I am sure it is not spyware, because I don't really download anything, and I've run 3 programs checking for spyware (Spybot, Adaware, and another) and I have Norton/Symantec.
-Does this have something to do with my registry?
-What should my settings be on NHC? I keep my laptop plugged into AC at all times...
It is a Toshiba M45 S331

Thanks in advance for your help. I really don't know what to do and this forum seemed very helpful when I browsed around.

Hi Ankur,
That error is usually displayed when you hibernate with USB disk attached and then while the comp is off you unplug the disk and turn off the comp. Cache didn't copy all that was needed on the disk.
NHC shouldn't slow your comp unless it is supposed to. I mean if you didn't deliberately underclock your CPU. I do that occasionally - when I want cool comp.
Boot time can prolong because NHC needs to load its driver. Use 10.1 beta 03 - it has a new, much faster driver.
I think NHC does everything over its own means of controlling the comp. Meaning - registry shouldn't be affected or any of the windows settings.
Hope it helps, -
Thanks for your reply, ikovac.
I'm out of ideas and rather frustrated. My laptop is still slow when it comes to opening programs such as firefox or adobe reader....It was not this slow before. I do not even know what to look for anymore, I ran ewido, which found some firefox cookie things, cleaned those up, and that's the last thing I did....
If anyone has any ideas, please share them. Otherwise I plan to reformat in a couple weeks... -
Sounds to me like your registry is all screwy, so it's time to reinstall windows.
I know, I know, but once you do you'll be pleasantly surprised~!
Try it.
Cheers,
Mike -
I know it's a long shot, but it could also be the hard drive beginning to die...that's what happened on my old HP. Boot times got slower and slower, whole computer started to slow down...then the buzzing noises.
I'd do the safe thing and back up my data while I still could, if I was you.
Then, use NHC to check the S.M.A.R.T. data on the hard drive tab. See if your HD is failing any checks.
