Well, this isn't really software, but its not hardware either, so I picked the best room I could find:
I'm using an external display with my nvidia GeForce GO 7400 on an HP DV5000t.
Question 1:
How do I make sure both my displays have a start button in the corner? Only the primary does at the moment.
Question 2:
I unplug the laptop and take it to work each day, where there's no external monitor. How should I set things up to best handle constantly switching between having one or two monitors? At the moment I have to manually change the settings each time I plug/unplug the monitor, but is there a way to auto-detect, or quickly switch between profiles, or something?
Thanks!

the nVidia software typically has an options list for the second monitor, the option you want is Clone - the others add to desktop space, not repeat it. I don't know if it is possible to autodetect though or if it even cares when set to clone mode.

Thanks for the reply,
Sorry - should be more clear. I do want extra desk space, so clone wouldn't be for me. However, I'd like to have the Start bar on both screens too.
I've figured out how to set up two profiles ("docked" and "undocked"), and you can use keyboard shortcuts to switch between them when going to work. Works really well, because in "docked" more my applications automatically appear in the external display, and in "undocked" on the laptop display. It also means the cursur doesn't disappear onto the second display when undocked, which was a problem before. I'll go into more details on these options if anyone wants.
Any ideas on the Start bar issue. -
ok, then sorry, I don't know of any way to make the start menu appear in two places.
