I have a few questions: Does anyone use Daemon Tools? If so, how does it function? Is it safe to install and use? Does it cause any problems, especially in a 64-bit environment? I remember using it a while back and it was rather bothersome.

I ask because I have an ISO that I would rather not burn. Are there any programs better than Daemon Tools that's a better virtual CD program?

i use DT for all my .iso/image-related work (except burning of course). no major problems at all so far. i'd recommend it without hesitation. where (or with what) are you experiencing problems?

Whizzo, thanks very much for the reply. I'm not experiencing any problems now, but when I had it installed about a year ago on my XP partition, I remember it being very bothersome. It would auto-start itself at all kinds of random times. Other times it would fail to run whatever ISO I wanted it to. So you see, they were just minor annoyances. I didn't know if there was anything more "dangerous" that I had to be aware of.

Also, while I have you, I need to ask you another question. Would I be able to install the program from the mounted ISO in DT, or would I still have to burn it onto a CD/DVD before I can install it onto my system?

    Hello Thaansa3,

I have got Deamon Tools v4.30.2 on my both laptops.... works
great in Vista 64bit, don't see any problem with it. If you decide
to install it, do not install toolbar or any extras that came with it.

    Cheers...

Thanks, Martee. I think that I'm going to go right ahead and download it. Do you have any idea if I would be able to install the program from DT, or would I still have to burn the ISO image to a CD/DVD?

Yes, you can do it, just mount image, open it and run setup.

We had this same discussion in another thread a few days ago. I settled on MagicDisc because, like you, all I needed was a way to mount an ISO. I didn't need, or want all the other bells and whistles that Deamon tools had. Not that I have anything against Deamon tools, it just did a lot more than I needed.

Sorry, I had no idea the thread existed. I had already pretty much settled on Daemon Tools, but I would still like to read the information in the thread. If you don't mind, can you post the link?

EDIT: Disregard the request above. I was able to find the link.

DT is real nice, even the lite version. You can chose your options like autostart, number of virtual drives, what file extensions you wish to associate w/ the program (iso, etc.).

    Enjoy

I use it now, I used to use Power/Magic ISO but it's easier to just get the free version of DT. I don't need it to do anything but mount.

Sometimes in x64 it dosen't wanna unmount, I think it's just my Vista hating me but it happens from time to time.

Some stuff (like games) has hidden data tracks though, also its convent to keep it as an iso to burn it to a disk.
