    Hi guys,
so I recently rebooted my OS, windows vista home premium, to clean out some bloatware and help the performance of my computer. But when I looked at the Windows Experience Rating, it had dropped from 4.5 to 4.3. The specific category that dropped was graphics: desktop performance for Windows Aero. ive installed some driver support for my graphics card to hopefully boost that score, but to no avail. My gaming graphics score went up to 5.2, but my determining score remained the same at 4.3. is there anything I can do to increase the performance of Windows Aero? what exactly is it?? Im a bit confused. Thank you for the help in advance.

That score determines how well your computer can handle Aero's features and the Gaming graphics determine whether or not your computer can run a certain game. Like for a Brand new game that needs a super powerful graphics chip you need like a 5.0. I wouldn't worry about your score too much though, it's no biggie. As long as you have a 3.0 for Aero your cool, but for the rest you need the best score possible, so i think that was for the best. However it happened.

Your windows experience score is meaningless, period. It does not matter what it says. Don't pay attention to it, at all.

Not true, your score can help you determine if you need to upgrade your computer sometimes. Just because it can be hacked doesn't mean if it's true it's meaningless.

No, it can't, because it's scores are not standardized. I don't say it's meaningless because it can be hacked, I say it's meaningless because it truly is, meaningless. It's scores have no direct correlation to any real world performance.

Well that's opinion, what facts do you have to back that up?

I updated the Catalyst drivers on my Toshiba Satellite A215 (comes with a x1200 IGP), and while the system doesn't run any slower, my WEI when from 3.0 to 2.8 overall, because of the updated graphics drivers. But the computer hasn't suddenly gotten slower.

Likewise, on my desktop with Vista Business and a Nvidia 6800, my score went from 3.0 to 3.2 with the latest Nvidia drivers, yet my system doesn't run any better or worse than before. Other than e-peen rating and possible future software ratings, I can't think of any use for the WEI.

Actaully, that's not the way it works with benchmarks. For them to be of any value, they first have to be proven to have some significance, some correlation with real world results. This has most definitely not been shown for WEI scores, so at the present time they must be disregarded as a meaningful performance benchmark.

Exactly. This is why I've mentioned in prior posts about WEI favoring the GMA 950 over the Go 7200 from a "performance" perspective. That is not only ridiculous, it is inconceivable (unless we are talking about power utilization)......

    :)

BTW, my graphics score went down when I upgraded from my year-old stock driver (so don't feel bad). ;)

That's your proof right there. a x1200 and a 6800 with the same score....

Or in my case, I had a X1600 in the nc8430 score worse than a X1400 in another system I looked at! Or how about a 0.2 point increase as soon as I rebooted my 8710p (this actually happened with NO system changes).

sweet. cuz i was gettin a bit irritated with the WEI score... I don't see its purpose at all. it seems to me that it is just some psychological boost for comparing systems at best buy or something.. haha

yea its really not good for any practical purpose. its pretty much only their for the average person to know how their system ranks. most people just know how to use a computer and careless about how anything works. lol just my two cents worth i dont really think of it as a reliable means of rating the hardware or performance of a computer.
