This news is going to upset a lot of people.
"The developer of the program said in an announcement that giving up on Classic Shell is a decision mostly forced by three factors, including lack of free time, frequent Windows 10 updates that break the previous version of the app, and changes that Microsoft makes to the operating system."

One can only really blame M$ for this one. They seem hellbent on making things harder for programmers to customize the latest Windoze Service. Will they not be completely satisfied until it's completely locked down so no 3rd party apps/programmes will run? Who really knows, but it's just another reason to stick with the tried and true Win 7. I know I will.

Most things are moved to UWP apps so APIs will be limited because you can't tweak UWP APIs like Win32 ones.hmscott likes this.

What !?
Why always good things come to an end. I have been using this since my GPU upgrade making me to use Win8.1, Now after this is gone I guess I don't have anymore free and fast and working alternatives..
But you know all is not lost. As you can see below FOSS might help this wonderful piece of essential software to live on.. Such a shame, how M$ is ruining the Win32, as you can already read most of the similar things in the Win10 thread here on NBR.
Also how's the startisback ?Last edited: Dec 4, 2017hmscott likes this. -

StartIsBack and all other alternatives miss one major thing, read what I said here bro: http://forum.notebookreview.com/threads/phoenix-software-updates.794490/page-87#post-10642473
I even contacted the StartIsBack developer back then when I used to use it about this and he just ignored me..... -

Well, the good news is the ClassicShell Project is being released and another developer can take up the Project
" Classic Shell, one of the most popular third-party Windows Start menu apps, is being retired, with the source code released online for the developer community to fork the app and keep the project alive."
Windows 10 is as much or more of a disaster for developers as it is for users, with MS constant updates breaking more than they fix.
The best "shell" is the original running native on Windows 7

It was my favorite Start Menu replacement when I used Windows 8/8.1, and back then I tried them all.tonyr6, Vasudev, Ashtrix and 1 other person like this. -
I've never had any issues with Startisback, pricing is pretty fair and hasn't let me down since Windows 8's release. I wonder when we'll see Classic Shell "return", that was typically my go to for new builds for friends/family who didn't want to pay for a replacement start menu.

Check the chart here bro, press CTRL + F to launch the search in your browser, then type RECENT
you will see that Classic Shell is the only Start Menu app that has a proper recent apps functioning exactly like it did on Windows 7. that is very important to me as I don't place a lot of icons on my desktop so I like to have the recent apps depending on how much I use them in the recent apps list of the start menu for ease of access -
I wouldn't say Classic Shell is dead.... it's just not being updated anymore.
The current version works fine and will live forever on Major Geeks. ^_^hmscott likes this. -
Live forever, or until another Win 10 shell update hits and that build becomes incompatible, which is the reason the project was abandoned in the first place.Last edited: Dec 15, 2017alexhawker likes this.
