Rainmeter - how's it like? Is the learning curve real steep ?

Since my OS is installed on my 120gig SSD, will Rainmeter shorten my SSD's life or will it not affect it??

    Thanks.

Rainmeter won't affect it at all. There is nothing to learn in Rainmeter, just install. If you want some other themes for it, you can download it and put it in the Rainmeter folder and that's it.

I see, I thought there was coding involved. Thanks for the quick reply though.

For some themes there may be a TINY bit, but mainly just changing the colour, or what drive it see's, such as changing C to D, or something like that. I haven't used Rainmeter in a while, though.

Rainmeter does require you to code (Which is easy) if you want to customize and make your own themes but most people just download one they find off Google.

One thing you think know though, is that any uptime readouts normally involve quite a bit of disk usage. Should always check if any programs are hitting the drive hard after you get your set up running.

I wouldn't listen too much to the naysayers until you've given it a try. I'm using Rainmeter on my Intel 80GB SSD and love it. I'm running quite a few skins and they only consume 14MB of RAM. I'm one who gets obsessed. Actually spent the greater portion of a day modifying and rearranging to get something that I find both aesthetically pleasing AND functional to my needs. My current setup will last me most of this year until I get bored with it:

Give it a try and have fun with it. It's not going to shorten the life of your SSD as it's a program that reads various bits of data. It doesn't do any writing to your SSD.

RE: the comment about "cluttering" up one's desktop. Not everyone needs to be done sloppily. Some of us are quite good at preventing clutter.

That particular wallpaper is solely to show off rainmeter in the forums, where the image is smaller than an actual screen. I've got a much nicer wallpaper currently running

when's the last time i looked at my desktop? seeing my desktop means not doing anything useful => never.

but yes, it would work without a flaw on an ssd.

I don't move about this site for your pleasure. I show what photos I choose to show. Also, there is no "clutter" on my computer, so don't tell me that there is. It's also not "eye candy". My skins were chosen for specific function and I reference them quite often.

To consume 120MB of ram, either you have memory leak with some plugin or a poorly coded theme.

Coding is really easy if you done conky before.

I find most rainmeter stuff pointless, do I care about seeing a newsfeed on my desktop all day when I can just view that site directly one time and see that same content + more?

Do I need to see a live view of my HDD consumption when I can go to "my computer" and see it and I know its not going to change much unless I do something like install a game.

Same goes for 90% of all the other stuff I have seen in rainmeter, most of it is just pointless and going to consume desktop space and computer resources.

Considering I keep my desktop icon free for a reason, why undo the clean with adding a ton of widget/gadget like things.

That said I do use rainmeter on my laptop, but just for one thing. I have a nice simple clock that looks like a part of my wallpaper that I like. When I am at work it helps remind me of the time since the little clock in the taskbar is not really eye catching.

One nice thing about rainmeter on SSD is pretty much everything loads right away.

That is very true. Even though I've got my personal folders on a 2nd internal HDD, I've relocated my RM skins folder back to my SSD for faster load time.

I used Rainmeter for a while, and then just switched over to Window's built in desktop gadget system, although I only use a Network meter, Weather gadget and a date gadget (since I use the slim taskbar).

I had a gadget that monitored cpu use, ram/page use, and gpu clocks but it leaked memory like no other, and just stuck the ram and gpu clocks in the taskbar along with temps, since I can see that easily.

I can use the desktop ones only because I have 2 screens, my laptop's screen (where everything lives) usually is full of windows that arent maximized, I use my external monitor for web browsing.
