So this has happened a couple of times now, over the past few weeks. I was looking on Ebay.com, and the computer would just hard freeze... The mouse will not move, CTRL-ALT-DELT does not work, the only way to turn it off is it hold the power button. the CPU was only at a couple % of usage, the temp was 111F , so it did not lock up because i was maxing out the CPU. I was using google Chrome, maybe the Beta version. Is this Vista, or a software causing these random freezes? It does not happen often, but just enough to keep it in my mind, that this does happen...![]()
Dell Latitude 520. Thanks.

Does it really freeze forever? I have had freezes with Chrome. After a while it comes back and tells me some plug in crashed and if I want to stop using it.
-
Suspect HardDisk Failure run test on it.

111 F seems a bit hot? Maybe you should try tilting your laptop with a book to allow airflow.
-
It is 111F or 44C. -
What the temp on the video.
Freezing are usually temperature related on the video card. -
There are a few things you can do:
- try looking up critical errors occuring via Event Viewer (Start > type 'event viewer' > select custom view for critical errors over past few days...)
- use Vista's built-in memory diagnostic to test the RAM for any errors, though this possibility isn't likely.
- if this freezing happens even when you're not using Chrome, then you can obviously rule out that specific program as being the cause. Letting us know which is the case is a very important piece of information. -
Just a quick check - you're not using RMclock or something similar are you?

It happened again.. I left it for 35 mins to see if it would unlock, and nope... nothing. I can turn BT on and off, but thats it... Just out of the blue it will happen, randomly, for no reason, at any time. CPU usage does not matter.. Come to think of it, it have never hard froze with the screen saver...
Will i damage the computer from hard shutting it off? I have "Enable Enhanced Performance" and "Enable Write Catching On This Disk" in "C" properties. also have indexing off.... It hurts me to shut it off like that.. Temp was not a issue, as it was around 115F (46C).
thanks.. -
Assuming you've run through all our suggestions, I would recommend just sending it to HP for repair, if you still have a warranty on the machine.

So the problem was NOT vista. It was my Hard drive with bad sectors.. A nice new WD Scorpio Blue 320GB and it has not freezed in weeks.
Just thought i would give you an update. Thanks!.
