Hi...
What is the quickest and most efficient way to transfer my bookmarks from IE8, Chrome and Opera to my new machine?
The bookmarks on my old machine were specific to the browsers. On my new machine, I'd like each of the browsers to have all the bookmarks.
Thanks

For IE, copy your Favorites folder from your profile from one machine to the other.
In Chrome, go to the bookmark manager and export the bookmarks to a file--copy that file to the new machine and from within Chrom import that file back (it will be an .html file)
In Opera, go to the bookmark manager and export the bookmarks to a file--copy that file to the new machine and from within Opera import that file back. (it will be an .adr file) -

Thanks. Also, is there no way by which I could send all these bookmarks (from all the 3 browsers on my old machine) onto a site on the web and download it from there into each of the 3 browsers on my new machine? -
Why? Just put them on a flash drive or email them to yourself...

Simply because it may be easier if I could have them online and accessible at any given point in time. -
Probably. Try setting up a gmail account for that purpose - attach the relevant folders to an email that you send to yourself on that account, and voila - instant ersatz online storage.

Does this mean that i have to keep emailing myself as and when I update/add to my bookmarks, which I do on a daily basis?

You can use Xmarks to store bookmarks online, it works for IE and Chrome, but not Opera.

Hey...thanks! Yup this might work since I don't use my copy of Opera too much.
Cheers! -
opera link will sync bookmarks between running copies of opera.....

In Chrome, just sync your bookmark with your google account.
-
Chrome offers bookmark sync via google docs

OK. I think I better clarify. Optimally, what I'd like to do is to consolidate ALL my bookmarks currently on 3 browsers (IE8, Chrome and Opera) to an online location. This will simplify matters when (1) I download and use a new browser which is not one of the three mentioned above (2) when I operate a new machine (3) when I use a 3rd party machine.
Further, I would like to be able to keep these consolidated bookmarks on all three browsers (or maybe two - leaving out Opera since I don't use it as often as I used to) on my desktop and on my laptop. As an when I update my bookmarks, the consolidated online list should also get updated. In this way they are sync'd with the bookmarks on my own machines.
In this connection, I think Jayayess1190's recommendation to use xmarks works well with the caveat that it does not work for Opera.
Thanks -
There is no clear standard for bookmark files that the major browser makers adhere to.
As you've noticed, you can probably sync up 2 or 3 out of 4 or 5 browsers. But not all of them. -

Yup...noticed that. I think the xmarks solution is the best option that has been suggested thus far. As for Opera, I will use the Opera sync feature and keep my Opera installations on my machines updated. Unfortunately, Opera may have to be a standalone browser, which should not really be a problem given that I don't use it too much in the first instance.

Sounds like you've found a new product to create.

Gosh! I don't code anymore...wish I did! -
Sounds like something an enterprising coder could work up. I suppose the concept would be some sort of a cross-browser plug-in/extension that would - either automatically or manually, depending on the user's preference - make the browser upload its current bookmarks file to a central location and download updated bookmarks each time it was started (or each time the user told it to update), with a url a user could point a browser to in the case of a browser without the plug-in/extension that would make all of the current updated bookmarks available to the user as links in a single webpage that would open in new tabs/windows when the user clicked on them (I thought about having functionality that would download your updated links to a browser that didn't have the plug-in/extension, but then realized that doing so might present privacy issues if the user forgot to clear his bookmarks from a public browser before closing the browser out and leaving).
Does that sound about right? -
Not many people use all browsers though.
-
No, but some use several, typically with one being their primary browser and the others there for variety, or for some specific purpose. Also, if someone is very dependent on using bookmarks that change frequently, having those available online so that one can access them anywhere from someone else's browser makes a certain degree of sense.

Now, THAT would be ideal! Pity I have lost my coding skills and have moved away from the field.
