I've disabled it because I had another anti-spyware. Now I wanna use it again. I enabled it in Services, but the icon doesn't show in my tray when I restart even though I set it to always show. Do I need to add MSAScui.exe to my startup folder?
-
You have to reboot after enabling it in Services.
Alternatively, you can probably open up Task Manager, Services tab, and start the Windows Defender service.
Also in the Defender UI make sure that the option "Use Windows Defender" is checked... and the real-time scanning option too.
btw I never knew about the option to show the system tray icon... thanks for that.
-
I did reboot after enabling it. And I checked Use Windows Defender, however the icon didn't show up ...
-
ctrl-shift-esc to open task manager... services tab... next to Windows Defender, does it say Running or Stopped?
-
Running, but in Processes, MSAScui.exe isn't running until I manually open it. Then, the icon shows in the tray.
-
Did you re-enable it in the Windows Defender options too?
Go to Control Panel -> Windows Defender -> Tools -> Options
Make sure you have this box checked:
-
Are you sure you didn't disable it either in msconfig or in Defender itself (or in some other startup program manager)?
I think MSASCui is just the GUI, not the actual scanner... but it does run at startup on mine. -
Also, follow this guide to add the registry key back for the startup:
http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=159178
-
Yes it's checked.
-
Windows Defender doesn't show up in The Startup tab of msconfig, only in Services tab.
-
Just tried it and rebooted. WD service is running, WD is now in Startup of msconfig, but when I load Windows, MSAScui.exe doesn't load.
-
You can try creating a shortcut of MSASCui.exe and move it to Startup folder.
-
Works, but it opens The WD window instead of loading WD silently ... I'm wondering: If I set The WD service to Auto and even if MSAScui.exe doesn't load, is WD still running in the background, just no UI is loaded?
-
Ok I see an error in that key, it's not supposed to be only a "%" sign.
You do you how to use regedit?
Start -> Run -> regedit
Then browse to that key and fix the path to:
The "-hide" is what makes it load silently, and that's how the default key is.Code:HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\WINDOWS\CURRENTVERSION\RUN Name=Windows Defender Data=%ProgramFiles%\Windows Defender\MSASCui.exe -hide

Sorry I go there, right click, Modify, what do I put in value instead of %? %ProgramFiles%\Windows Defender\MSASCui.exe -hide?
-
Yep, just put %ProgramFiles%\Windows Defender\MSASCui.exe -hide
-
OK I'll restart tomorrow and see (I've restarted like 20 times just now, I feel for my laptop
). Thanks! And nice name btw, Stewie is my all-time favourite.

Restarts are harmless to laptops, in fact it is good.

I have the exact entry in the registry that Stewie suggests. But Defender never shows in the notification area icons unless I manually start defender's UI. The service starts and runs just fine. I do have the option set in Windows Defender's option list to Always display the icon in the notification area.
Hmmmmmmmm.

Not good for wear and tear of my HD lol

AFAIK, the windows defender IS running in the background, and the icon is shown *only* when the following is done... or else try changing this setting...
For me it works...
*sorry if I misunderstood the original issue, but I did read through the posts thought this might help the icon to show up...*
Thanks and hope it helps
Cheers.

OK just restarted, works nicely! Thanks, solved.
