I was just wondering if anyone knows of any free desktop gadgets or programs which give a realtime readout of system power consumption.

    thanks :D

HWmonitor shows watt usage on my desktop, not sure if it will show for notebooks.

Try BatteryBar as it provides better time remaining estimates than Windows. Google it.

I can not help thinking the OP is looking for something for his Desktop. Some hardware details would be helpful. ;)

Kill-a-watt or otherwise on the power cord would be the most reliable, I'm not sure PCs are equipped with sensors to measure power consumption. If it's a desktop I'm not sure how it would be capable of measuring this, as you have devices that receive their energy directly from the power supply without going through the motherboard, and the power supply has no way of reporting this back to the computer.
