Somehow, I set my external monitor to a resolution that it doesn't support.

Now, any time I plug in my external monitor, my laptop display instantly goes off (expected behavior)

and my external display instantly goes off (unfortunate expected behavior)

    How do I fix this!?!

I have an nvidia GPU w/ the latest non-beta drivers, and I am running windows 7 x64 (technically windows server 2008 r2, but it's all the same)

what is sick is that I can't seem to figure out how to change or reset those external monitor settings without actually having the thing plugged in.

    FAIL.

    HELP!

Did you change the settings from the Nvidia Control Panel?

I think you should start from not turning your laptop display off first. Win+P and select "Duplicate" or "Extend". Then connect your external monitor, and change resolutions of the second display.
