Ok, I was doing some file and folder manipulation trying to clean things up a bit in Vista Business x64.

I did some cut and copy / paste of some folders with several sub folders and lots of files to another hard drive.

The resulting behavior was very odd.

I got the status window showing time, size, and files left. But before it could finish the status window just disappeared. The folders that I cut/paste actually copied SOME of the files over, and left all of the original files and folders in the original location.

I then did a cut / paste with folders independently deeper in the directory, and it did it again. But in some cases it actually cut the files and pasted them but the directories remained intact.

I even booted into safe mode to try to see if that would help and it exhibited the same behavior. In the end, it looks as if I have everything, but I had to double and triple check before I deleted the original files and folders.

Anyone have any ideas? This is on a fresh install with SP2 installed.

Thanks for trying. I was trying to move a HUGE number of files and GB of data at once (something like 35,000 files and 40GB). I didn't lose anything that I can tell, so that's good I guess, although I did have it backed up.

that's very strange. never seen that before.

one thing: you're sure you don't reach the limit of 260characters per path? it's just as guess as we had that topic recently. but it should report an error, not just quit. it always reports the errors for me.. :(

well, at least no data loss. good boy, doing backups :)

No, I checked all that, and thought about the character length too as I read that thread too. It was very odd. I am using AHCI instead of IDE, would that have anything do with it? Basically I just updated my "home server" from an old Athlon64 to a Core 2 Duo Shuttle box and threw in two 1TB drives. I decided I was going to backup everything, and start from scratch so I could eventually trash all the old files I don't really need.
