What is the best free software that downloads videos from the Internet (both from Youtube and others)? The one I am familiar with is not longer good.

I use download helper. It is a firefox addon. You will need to be more specific about what formats you need to download.

Any video clips on the web, not sure about the format, maybe any format? Including youtube but more than that. Download helper may only be used for Firefox? Can it be used with other browsers?

What browser are you using? There's many Opera and Firefox extensions (and I presume Chrome extensions) that can do what you want.

Just use the dreaded RealPlayer. Puts a download button on most any web video and all you have to do is click it. After it grabs the vid it will ask what format you want to save it in. DVD, for your phone, even gives you the option to save only the audio if you want.

Just installed RR and it does work! Thanks for the "dreaded" suggestion :) I never realized the capability of RR. But then I am starting to wonder why, given the RR's easy functions, are there so many other video downloading software? Are there some things that RR is not capable of but others are?

I think the reason why is that RealPlayer is a rather large program that given half a chance will take over your computer. Haha, in fact for years I avoided it like a virus but then, like you, I found my tiny stand-alone downloader stopped working.
If you managed to opt out of practically everything during the install so the only part of RealPlayer you see is the little download button in your browser you will enjoy it very much I think. :)
