Any tips on the best brand/model of scanner to ensure the scanner, and its software package, works well under 64-bit Windows?
One of my PC repair customers, without asking for advice, bought a Dell with 64-bit Vista from Best Buy. He intends to order and use the free Windows 7 upgrade when it comes out, and he'll still be 64-bit. So far, so good, but...
The main problem is his older Dell A940 multifinction: the drivers came down OK, but there is no application available to hold his hand and run the scanner. Worse, Microsoft Office Document Scanning in Office 2007 crashes when it tries to access the scanner, and the Office apps don't seem to support TWAIN scanning. I d or through Google.
I used his Office 2003 CD to roll him back, and showed him how to scan from within Word & Publisher, and into MSPaint. I explained why manufacturers often don't write new drivers for 5-year-old hardware. He is OK with ditching the DellExmark and buying a new multifunction in a month or two... but he expects me to choose it.
Help? Suggestions? Tips? Flames?

I use an HP C6180 scanner/copier/printer/fax...though I don't use the fax. I don't think it's a current model, but if they have 64-bit drivers for this one you'd have to assume that they have 64-bit driver for newer ones. Mine worked fine under Vista x64 and still works fine under W7 x64 with the full suite of apps.
Recommendations for 64-bit Vista/Win7 multifinction device?
