After seeing my laptop lose 10-20% of its data and having to pay to secure the rest back, I'm looking for something more reliable than windows backup to keep my data safe.
I was recommended Acronis TrueImage but that has a negative rep for its insistence on cloud storage and poor ability to restore data. Are there any other alternatives? I'm not averse to paid software so long as it does the job.

I really like Macrium Reflect Free. EaseUs Todo Backup and AOMEI Backupper also work well.

Macrium Reflect Free is the one.

Does Macrium Reflect Free clone the entire disk contents, registry and all, or just a small portion of it?

It will clone the entire disk contents or, if you choose, specific partitions on the disk.

Thanks. I'll give it a go on the new machine when it arrives.

I use Acronis and you are NOT required to use the cloud and nor do I. You can clone your C drive and have a disk ready to use if your C drive goes south.

I've used Macrium to back up an entire machine's hard drive, and it's really quite nice. Back up the whole HDD/SSD to another HDD, and then burn it to another disk when needed, or use conversion tools to convert it to a virtual machine. Good tool.
