Do you multiple IM clients? If so try Digsby or Pidgin to combine all of them to save screen space.

I use Avira & WinRar on my Netbook.
I will also be using OpenOffice.
And, I use Meebo for my IMing needs on my Netbook.
And, I am proud to say I do not use IE on my Netbook, just FF!
(I did try IE...not so good...)

cdburnerXP if you need to burn to recordable media
Notebook Battery Info as a better power meter measure.
ccleaner (for any system really, not just netbooks)
QuietHDD (to quiet the HDD down from all the head parking)
keytweak (for those who don't like their current keyboard layout)
    Synctoy.

How well will a netbook run the open office spreadsheet app? How about PDFs?

A netbook seems perfect for my livingroom web browsing, but I also run tabletop role playing games and would love a cheap option to run a few spreadhseets and 3 or 4 simultaneous PDFs... I'm just afraid the netbook may slow down or choke with all of that open.

A netbook will run spreadsheets just fine. They are really underrated little machines. My eee pc 1000h is able to run half life 2 at a playable framerate as long as you use dx7.

The only thing with simultaneous pdfs is that you would have to alt tab them. The screen has a very small resolution(1024x600), so side by side windows is difficult to operate.

    Interesting.

I had read reviews downplaying performance. I was afriad of noticeably long slowdown if I had several multi-MB PDF's open at once. ALT-TABing is fine by me, so long as the pages are readable. I'll have to give these little guys another look.

A netbook would be perfect for tabletop gaming. I had a friend that had the old HP "netbook like" Jornada that he used. Worked great! That was 4 years ago.. :)
