Is it even possible to recover files from a jumpdrive like it is a hdd?
I have not written any new files to it since incidnet.
Dont know what happened. But i just lost a paper i was about 12 hours into.
Word froze, so i had to end process it. When i reopened, it had my paper on the left as recovered. So i opened it and saved it as a new file on my jumpdrive. Then... word froze again. So this time i ejected the stick (the right way), logged off the computer, and logged back in (school computer so it resets everyhting). When i plugged the stick back in a message came up saying it was corrupted/unformatted. BUT.... all of my previous files were still on it. EXCEPT for the ones i need! the new file that i save from the recovered was gone. Even all the changes i made and saved to the origional file for past 4 hours or so were gone. Basically everytihng i did since i last plugged it in is gone.
I REALLY DONT WANT TO START WRITING THIS PAPER ALL OVER AGAIN, help please, suggestions?

If Word froze while writing to the flash drive, you are screwed.

it didnt freeze WHILE it was writing (at least i hope not). there were files that were definately on there before it froze that arent there now.

You can try using one of those recovery programs, they work on flash drives too, this is a free one:

Honestly, I don't know how well it will work when the drive is corrupted, but you got nothing to lose to try. There are other more advanced software out there, most of them work with flash drives too, but it's not free.

I can't help you with your current dilemma, but in the future, do frequent manual saves. I've had bad luck with Word and Excel when working too long in a document without saving. I'm not familiar enough with the inners of the software to really know, but it seems as if it has buffers or registors of limited size that once reached cause the programs to crash.
I've lost significant work building complex spreadsheets by going a few hours without saving. If I save every half hour or so, however, I can build for days without closing the program or the file - without a crash. Maybe it's changed in newer versions of Office, but the bug gets me in, I think, Office 2003 or 2000. -
I found another software that might able to recover it:

Recuva has worked for me in recovering from corrupted flash drives before, but it really is luck of the draw, because it also didn't work for a friend.

Well... I believe Microsoft Word periodically saves documents you are working on in case of something like this. That's why it was able to recover it after reopening Word. However, I'd imagine it saves that periodic backup to a location on the hard drive rather than your flash drive... Which would mean when the computer reset itself, it's gone.
But still try Recuva like a few recommended. It's your best shot. Pray to the computer gods. (I have prayed to them often, but they never listen to me. Maybe I upset them.)

Thanks guys ill give em a shot.
If i use one of the the recovery programs and it doesnt work, will that have messed up my chance to use a different one? In other words... is there a better one i should try first?
And, yes, i was manually saving it, after like every couple sentences, cause ive had this crap happen to me before, except in the past i at least had a fairly recent hard copy.
I know it auto-saves, but i just dont know what happened.
Its like everyhting i saved to it from one period of plugging it in and unplugging it is gone. -

Dude!, I feel ur pain..I know how u feel...sh*t like this has happened to me one to many times...and it's like how the **** am I gonna be able to start this over...*sigh*...it's one of the worse feelings ever...anyhow...I think u should try this...seeing that I didn't see it mentioned in any of the posts...go back to the computer that u were using...open up Word, click on File--->Open and click the option on the left pane that says "My Recent Documents"...like where I have my cursor hovering over on the attached prt screen. If u see the document name in there and it's pointing to a location on the HDD then u might be in luck...try to open it!
Good Luck!Attached Files:
