    Hi...

Just ran into a problem, which I can't find a solution to - maybe there is no solution. But if you have any suggestions, I would be eager to know.

About 12 hours ago I was working on a Word 2010 document. While working, I also did some updates - using the System Update utility that Lenovo provides on its ThinkPads, which is my primary machine. One of the updates necessitated a System Restart, which I agreed to. However, I forgot to save the Word document that I was working on before the Restart.

System restarted with no problems and I shut down for the night. This morning, when I opened up another Word 2010 document, there was a panel on the lefthand side of the screen which said that there were 2 versions of the Word document that I was working on last night, which could be recovered. Not wanting to get distracted from what I was doing at the time, I selected the option that allowed me to recover the documents later. On opening up a third Word document, the panel appeared again but this time I accidentally selected to "discard" the recovery.

Now when I opened up the Word document that I was working on last evening, I find that the changes that I had made were all gone.

I know that if I had recovered the document when initially prompted I could probably have got the document with the changes that I had made. But since this not the case, is there anyway by which I could recover the original document - the document that I was working on last evening?

    Thanks

PS: In case this is relevant: My OS is Win 7 Pro x64. Rest the machine details are in the sig. Thanks.

PPS: I always thought there was (1) an auto-save feature on Word, and (2) there were 2 options for recovery - auto and manual.

If you have MS Office on your system, most versions have Shadow Copies (Previous Versions), and when you access the app, you should be able to access the version with your most recent changes.

If not, there's some 3rd party software that may help you. As a word of caution though, try to recover the file as soon as possible, because the longer you wait, the more likely you will overwrite it.

Shadow Explorer - ShadowExplorer.com - Downloads - Shadow Explorer is an alternative program for "Previous Versions,” for those editions of Vista and Windows 7 that do not offer Previous Versions. ( ShadowExplorer.com - Manual is the link to the “how to” instructions explaining how to utilize Shadow Explorer.)

Recuva - Undelete, Unerase, File Recovery - Home - Recuva - Undelete, Unerase, File and Disk Recovery - Free Download Recuva is a utility to restore files that have been accidentally deleted from your computer. This includes files emptied from the Recycle bin as well as images and other files that have been deleted by user error from digital camera memory cards or MP3 players. It will even bring back files that have been deleted by bugs, crashes and viruses!

Glary Undelete is an easy to use, yet powerful file undelete solution. It will bring back files emptied from the Recycle Bin, in a DOS window, from Windows Explorer with the SHIFT key held down. It will even recover files that have been deleted by bugs, crashes and viruses!

Spotmau Powersuite (not free) - Spotmau.com - Computer Service
It can do just about everything including unformat a disk.

Even if you press discard the files are not deleted.

    you can find them under:
    C:\Users\{your user name}\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Word\

discard just means that it will not ask you again.

I haven't had any problems with Word 2010 regarding recovering documents. So there must be something wrong on your end.
