Okay so i own a dell XPS m1530 laptop. My girlfriend just got a new Studio 15. For some reason she got a 64 bit version of Vista. She only has 3 gb ram and really does not have any use for the 64bit OS. My XPS laptop has 32 bit i was wondering if i would be able to reformat her computer using my Vista disk, which is 32 bit. Instead of using the one that came with her computer. I know i can get all of the drivers and things on the dell site, basically i just want to know is if the disk only works with the model it came with. Thanks

Why would you deprive her of a newer, better OS? Even if she does not have 4gb of ram or more, there are no drawbacks to 64-bit. If she ever needs more ram, your old-fashioned 32-bit will be a detriment. Driver issues are a thing of the past. Windows 64-bit will run 32-bit programs just fine, but as 64-bit programs become the norm, 32-bit OS will not run it.
Why do you hate your girlfriend? Or are you just jealous because she has 64-bit and you don't?
Leave her freaking computer alone you twisted psychopathic woman hater....
(and legally, you cannot put your pathetic, inferior dell xps m1530 OS on her more manly that your computer laptop) -
Well thanks for that informative post...@ss The reason i want to put the "inferior" 32 bit OS on is so she can run all the older games that she likes to play. Just need to no if it is possible. A simple yes or no would have done.
-
The older 32-bit games will work with vista x64.
-
First, in case you cannot tell, I was teasing you.
Second, it was informative--as I said and as avanish11 said, your older games will work just fine. Also, what you are proposing is illegal.
Third, you really shouldn't call people an @ss if you have no clue what you are talking about and you are too thick to see someone is just playing with you--it makes you look bad.
Now, if you have a problem with a specific old game, note it and someone will be glad to help you (probably not me though), but it won't have anything to do with a 64-bit vs. 32-bit.
Now, one caveat, now that you have added a little more information--since a 32-bit game runs in a 32-bit subsystem (think virtual machine, but not quite), there is a minor performance loss for this kind of situation. For any normal productivty or internet application, this means nothing.
Depending on her game, this small performance drag is imperceptible, but there is a remote possibility it could mean something (Crysis, maybe--but in truth, the video card on her laptop precludes playing Crysis on this laptop anyway). Once again, if you stated a specific game, someone might offer you some insight.
Of course, they might just think you're an @ss who doesn't deserve any help. Who knows.... -
Your older games should work fine on Vista x64 - don't worry.
And you can't legally use your XPS disc on her Studio laptop.
@gerryf19
It's hard to tell a joke over text, and all he wanted was help, he didn't ask you to joke around with him. -
I agree on sticking with Vista 64-bit... even if she only has 3GB of memory onboard. It's worlds better than the 32-bit. And don't worry about drivers, as everyone said above. Maybe you should move to 64-bit?

First off Gerry I did not know you were playing around, if you were then I apologize.
Second, the games run fine on my laptop, but for some reason they will not launch on hers. The only real difference between my laptop and hers is the fact that hers is 64 bit. So maybe there are other reasons that I will investigate. -
Well, I am sorry if my teasing around was recevied wrong--I just thought it was so outlandish that I didn't need a winking smilie
.
I thought "Why do you hate your girlfriend? Or are you just jealous because she has 64-bit and you don't?" was so over the top no one would take it seriously. I actually was going to go with some sort of lame small wiener joke (wow, the forum software censors the P word), but thought that was going too far.
Anyway, what games?
Here's another solution--albeit not an immediate one--depending on what version of Vista she got. You said brand new, so she will qualify for a update to windows 7.
Windows 7 Ultimate and Windows 7 Professional will have (currently in RC phase) XP Mode....it is essentially a windows xp machine that runs in virtual mode--the one drawback is the graphics are limited.
Just a thought.
But, again, what games? -
A really old version of Family Fued, Peggle, and Roller Coaster Tycoon. Also she does qualify for the free windows 7 upgrade (says the dell web site).
-
Her laptop was available with three different graphics chips--which one did she get?
By any chance did you install these on your machine and see if they work?
Let's just use RollerCoaster Tycoon as an example.
RCT has problems running on Vista, and on dual-core CPUs--so the issue's she is having are probably not are result of 64-bit, but more likley one of those issues.
Here are a slew of fixes for this game:

Additionally, try running in compatibility mode.
Without knowing your exact errors, I cannot offer more help. As always, more information results in better answers. -
I am almost certain that she has a 4570, the 256mb version. I know this card is plenty capable of playing these games. I installed Guild Wars on her computer which she can run at 1600x900 high gfx no problems. What usually happens when I try to play the games is, a window pops up that says that the .exe file has failed or is not responding something along those lines.
Reformatting Studio laptop with XPS disk.
