I've used Crap Cleaner on my Win 7 x64 installation a few times and so far it hasn't broken anything (as far as I can tell, anyway). Of course, that doesn't mean it won't bork YOUR machine, but what the heck, it IS a beta :)

I like to use the Portable App version myself...

I never really liked CCleaner's reg cleaner to start with. not even won XP or Vista :(

RegScrubVista FTW! Dunno if it works well with Vista though

I just started to test my favourite Advanced System Care (free) under Windows 7 and it seem to work well (well, I need longer testing to claim that). It cleans registers and does much more that that - highly recommended!

ASC 3 borked my 7 install beyond repair. Caused numerous filesystem issues that required a reinstall. Of course, I tried it again, and had to reinstall again. Haven't ventured to try another other than CCleaner, as I do not enjoy the whole Windows install process...

Mine is the full Pro version of ASC, maybe the deep scan is the part that borked it?

I am trying to control what ASC does under W7 and not to accept its actions blindly as I am already used to do under XP. So far nothing happened (i am 32 bit W7 and ASC free).

well, any XP/Vista 'cleaner' that hasn't been updated for Win7 is likely to 'bork' a system up.

You guys aren't installing a word processor, you're installing (and using) a program that is intended to clean out unknown entries in the registry. There is no way a pre-Win7 cleaner can be held responsible for the effects it may have on a Win7 system.

    Think about it.

In this case we can assume that CCleaner is the only one to be used. The newest version has had Win7 support added.

win7 doesn't rapitly change the registry structure, else all apps would fail.

and apps like ccleaner don't clean out uknown entries, they clean at very fixed places which are wellknown, and used by all windows os' all around the place.

and win7 is vista, so it may just happen that the cleaner doesn't clean out in a new place in the registry, where it could. but the old parts of the registry can't, ever, change, as long as apps rely on it. so the cleaner still works.

That's why CCleaner will not easily or very rarely kills a system.
Some registry scanners are just want to act clever or think themselves very pro, simply scan the registry, simply delete any registry which they think those registries are useless(important like hell actually).

the only danger of such a cleaner, if some other app killed some dependencies in the registry, that just happen to stay connected due to some crap that is still in.. once cleaned up, everything breaks apart and dies.

happened twice to me so far, for systems that where really messed up (say, xp never reinstalled since 2001, with all the virii and other crap that could have gotten onto those systems over the years (bonzy buddy anyone? :)). but as i told in advantage, probably a reinstall is needed, but we can try.. it wasn't big of a problem. we tried, and a reinstall was needed :)

I installed tuneup utilities 2009, but its acts a little wierd so I haven't really used it except for the optimization functions. ie. allowing more simultaneous downloads, and changing program shut down time etc etc... Have not risked any of the clean up tools, e.g. Disk Cleanup or Reg. cleaner.

I used CCleaner though and that worked fine for registry cleaning/disk cleanup.

I'll probally wait until Oct. 22nd, or until Tuneup Utilities releases more support for Win 7 before using it regulalary again.

I also heard that the Win 7 Registry is setup in a way that it doesn't need to be "cleaned" hardly ever.

yep, same as vista registry. it's mostly virtual nowadays, and has itself much more under control than it looks like. it just acts as the old registry so that apps still work. but it's a complex, spread database that can manage itself quite well (and, as some of you might know, databases can get filled very much without lowering performance much).

Indeed..... so I guess reg. cleaners are sort of pointless now? Or do they still serve some function...?

Ohhh I see. How to use compat. mode?
Then, shouldn't use the registry cleaner of TU2009.

go to the setups properties and chose compatiblity mode (or, i think, in win7, you can rightclick the setup and say "compatibility wizard" or similar).

not that i support TU. but to everyone it's own little placebo :)
