Is there a difference? I currently use CCleaner to clean out my registry and it works great, but was also looking at adding "AusLogics Registry Defrag" to my arsenal. "AusLogics Disk Defrag" looks great and I also wanted to know if anyone has used it? Any opinions?

Yes, there is a difference. A cleaner removes old registry keys that are not in use. For instance, when you uninstall a program, it will usually leave some registry keys. A registry defrag works like a regular defrag program, except it defrags the registry.

I used Auslogics registry defrag and didn't notice any changes good or bad. I don't know of any other registry defrag programs.

I've used one. It does make the registry more compact and boosts performance a tiny bit.

A registry cleaner searches for invalid or broken keys, and a defragger compacts it. You should run a registry cleaner to wipe any unneeded keys, then compact (because there is no reason to compact invalid keys, and a smaller registry means faster loading time)

I don't like Auslogics Disk defrag; it did nothing better than the XP defragger the couple of time I ran it on a friend's computer. For defragging, I am a Diskeeper 2008 fan, as it works fine for me.

As for registry cleaners, registry defraggers, registry optimizers etc stay far far away from them. They can potentially blow out your windows installation. They do nothing beneficial and if you delete the wrong keys, you'll be in a world of pain. You don't need to mess with the registry unless some specific program is giving you trouble. Windows will manage it just fine. You can do your bit by not installing unwanted programs in the first place. :)

I liked disckeeper as well. I agree, many of these registry programs just screw things up. I can say crap cleaner is good, but I really do not know if it is nesaccary.

My experience with registry cleaners and defrag is the older the computer, the more it works. No point in using them with a new pc, but for a couple year old pc, you could see results.
