I used to use RegScrubXP to clean up my registry on XP, but when I installed that on Vista, it was a no go. Is there any other good registry cleaner out there for Vista?

I think CCleaner is updated frequently, and I know it worked on Vista RC1 back when I was beta testing Vista.

Is CCleaner actually any good? I had it not too long ago and it would tell me that there were say 200 errors to clean, but only fix up like 50-75% of them.

You know, I don't know. I just used it since it was highly rated on download.com and had a simple interface. I haven't read reviews comparing it to other reg. cleaners.

I must have been thinking of something else. I just ran the slim version of this and in about 2 seconds it said it cleaned up 750+ MB of crap, and then on a second run, cleaned 10 MB more. It's pretty impressive that I had that much crap to clean up considering I only installed Vista today!

I have experinced with some Reg Cleaners such as CCleaner and Registry Mechanic 5, that after deleting/Repairing Reg ......and running it once again right after (or after a reboot) plenty or some of reg files remain.

And sometimes When deleting certain files with CCleaner or Windows Washer, some files don't delete.

I think it has to do with the UAC.

I'll try doing it with the UAC off and see what happens.

Registry FIX is the best for vista

HP Fan, please do not offer licenses because it is illegal. I'm sure you're aware of this. I'm also sure that Notebook Review does not support stealing software. While I'm in no position to even warn you, I'm sure the mods wouldn't have a problem doing so. Thanks.

    Hi,

RegCleaner 4.3 by Jouni Vuorio is the best I have used. Now it doesn't work with Vista at all. Is there any registry cleaner that has some of the features of Regcleaner 4.3? I am looking specifically for the ability to remove the entry a software leaves in the software list. Thank you.

I tried it just now. Thank you, but it doesn't do what need it to do. Has anybody here used Regcleaner 4.3? If you are not using Windows Vista, you owe it to yourself to try this amazing registry cleaner. Anyway, even though Regcleaner 4.3 can not remove anything in Vista, it still shows items in the software list, uninstall list, etc.

When you uninstall a software, an old entry is left behind. In Regcleaner 4.3, it shows up in the Software list. I don't believe this is part of the registry cleaning because none of the registry-cleaning softwares I have been testing will remove it. In Regcleaner 4.3 you can select this entry in the software list to remove it. The ability to remove this entry is important because some programs put, among other things, a counter in this entry. This is what makes Regcleaner 4.3 so valuable to me. Please help me find a registry-cleaning program with this function.

I found Advanced Windows Care v2 Personal (freeware!) to be very good and reliable on XP regarding the registry cleaning. I haven't tried it for Vista though. CCleaner is only good to clean unneeded files, it finds and fixes only a small faction of what AWC or other registry cleaners find and fix, even free ones (like Eusing).

Note, after I got AWC I use the paid Registry Mechanics very rarely (just to continue to compare its effectiveness with that of AWC). The compacting of registers present in RM also can be found as a separate freeware (i have it somewhere, though I use RM for this end, just because I have it already).

    Hi,

Somehow I missed your post. Jv16 is created by the same people who made Regcleaner 4.3. No more freeware this time though. I downloaded RegSupreme Pro from them. It retains all the features of Regcleaner 4.3 and works a lot faster. Yeah, I am happy now. However, I will wait for JV16 2007.

I've been using CCleaner on XP and it works in Vista and it works fine from what I have seen. The best method of registry cleaning is a clean install of XP every six months or so.

Dude--I ran the advance windows care on my desktop (XP) to see what it would find then exited. Ran CCcleaner next and WOW Advanced windows care found a million more registry problems and all kinds of stuff CCcleaner doesnt find.

Almost makes me weary to Hit the Fix button on AWC--Yikes

I have not ran regisrty fix yet to see what it finds?

    I've been running CCleaner, too.

However, intrigued by comments about Advanced Windows Care v2 and checking out reviews at download.com, I decided to give it a try.

I downloaded and installed the free version. I then ran CCleaner to clean and fix any issues.

Next, I updated and ran AWC. I got the following read-out:

    Spyware Scan--none
    Security Defense--32403 items unprotected
    Registry Scan--549 problems found
    System Analysis--52 problems found
    Startup Scan--13 items found
    Privacy Sweep--157 problems found
    Temporary Files Scan--2MB files found

Admittedly, I don't really know what all this entails. However, I allowed the program to take care of the problems.

One problem fixed has "sold" me on this free program. Something was blocking my BibleWorks 7 program from automatically copying verses into Nota Bene. It's a little feature that I rely upon almost daily. AWC corrected something that was interrupting the process of doing that.

One thing that has me concerned is I think under System Analysis--all the problems it wanted to fix pertaines to changing values for surfing the internet, I seemed to think it was alot to do with if I had a dial up connection and not broadband--changing alot of values and such? DOnt know--maybe it knows how Im hooked up

If you're talking about AWC, the free version recommends, if I remember correctly, to run it once a day. One click and it goes through its process. The pro version ($29.95, I think) will automatically run in the background, again, I my memory is correct. ;)

I just did an AWC scan and it reported no registry problems. Once a day seems to keep everything clean.

Some of the AWC fixes (on my XP machine) are from TuneXP. The settings show up in System Analysis. Apparently AWC thinks the speed tweaks are a little wacky. I just uncheck them, and fix everything else. AWC works great IMO.

I made numerous tests and comparisons with other registry cleaners, and I can
tell you that you can rely on what Advanced Windows Care does, as I do.

Just make sure you also use CCleaner to clean the junk files. AWC doesn't do that.

There are still some regisrty errors which AWC doesn't see (cf. Eusing free registry cleaner), but it is very reliable on what it does (while I would not 100% trust to Eusing), and it (usually) repaires more than a good $-ware Registry Mechanics. :)

Broadus: Next time something is blocked in your system you can try a small tool called Unlocker http://ccollomb.free.fr/unlocker/. I have it in my startup!

Entire scan only takes about 1-2 minutes on mine.

I think everytime you do a fix it keeps track of your last fix that you can revert back too in case anything Hokie shows up--Im I right Guys?

Actually, if you have UAC on try disabling that. It might be the reason. Otherwise I'm not sure. Everything works, but it will not run System Analyzer just says scanning, never gets anywhere.

Strange...as I said everything else works fine. I'm using x64, so maybe it's trying to run an unlicensed driver in the background. I know Everest Home (older version), and basically every temp monitor software was having fits with this.

    Anyone running it using x64?

Well, just today I got this problem: AWC hung on system analysis!
It has also reported a suspiciously high number of "security defence" problems - thousands!

I think it was my fault: 1) I installed today's windows updates and forgot
to reboot because I had urgent job to do, 2) later I downloaded for testing a program which turned out to be infected (it was of Russian origin but I didn't know about it before I felt first trouble) and the backdoor and trojans were not detected by my resident NOD32 and the trial Pest Patrol firewall. I was able to detect this infection only with the help of "remove it" and the trial Bitdefender-10 which was able to block their activity. I also had to reinstall AWC because it seems it was damaged by the infection, hence the failure to scan (and to remove all temp files). It was first time ever AWC has seen a spyware on my computer so that I didn't take it seriously as a spyware detector. However, it seems that he fell a victim while trying to protect my lappy from the evil code from Russia. What a caring progy! After reinstallation AWC is running flawlessly again! I am thinking now about purchasing the Pro version as a thank you for such a great product by Iobit.

The first time you run the program it will tell you that there are 1000,s of security defences--its just letting you know you need to block them. Its just like Spybots Immunize function.

Isn't 2.4 still beta? There must be something in it that is needed for your computer/configuration, IDK. I'm running 2.3.0.726. Glad it's working, though.
