Personally unless you are using a LOT of different apps and installing and uninstalling a lot of things registry cleaning isn't necessary. Your registry that you have for all of your programs isn't really that big of a concern HD space-wise so cleaning is really more of an iffy thing that could easily mess up a lot of things.
-
Just be careful, a LOT of registry cleaners have spyware or malware. -
No, it's never necessary.
And most of the time, it doesn't even make a noticeable difference. Only a few registry keys actually have a noticeable impact on performance (in particular startup items, and sometimes a few others)
And true, while in theory, having more stuff in the registry would slow down parsing of it, it's hardly a major issue, and besides, you're never able to trim it down significantly. (Removing, say, 500 entries is a drop in the ocean. The registry is huge. If you can remove half a *million* keys, you might start seeing a slight performance difference.) -
I do registry cleaning. For fun
.
I always get over 60000+ with Regcleaner Pro, though it did not make a noticeable difference in speed. -
I used a registry cleaner once on my old system, but it probably messed it up more than it was before...

I use RegScrubXP when I notice a program behaving abnormally, or if I've done an inordinate amount of uninstalls. Sometimes, cleaning the registry of damaged program keys can correct issues with software. I don't buy into a performance boost unless your performance really sucks to begin with. And if that's the case, a defrag would probably help much more.
-
Probably not cleaning the registry per-se, but I think a lot of registry cleaners out there are bundled with other tweaks and tools which *may* result in a speedier Windows install.

Tuneup Is vary Good For Vista user*

I've always found registry cleaners to cause more problems than they fix, YMMV.
