    Hello,
I am considering a purchase of a Saeger or a Compal laptop from a ODM reseller which gives the option of shipping the laptop without an OS

I already have a Dell laptop purchased in 2005, where I was supplied a dell-labled disk for Windows XP in the event I ever needed to reformat my desktop.

Question: Am I able to load windows XP on my laptop with this disk without any problems?

    Thanks

    Will

sure, u can use the disk to load XP into ur new laptop:
    - make sure that drivers are available for ur laptop devices
    - u have 30 days trial of the XP licence until u sort out the licencing/activation part

    cheers ...

If you abide by the EULA, you aren't allowed to use that OS on your new laptop - it's an OEM copy that is tied to the laptop it came preinstalled upon. Also, most Dell OS disks won't install on anything other than a Dell, as it looks for the Dell BIOS.

I've used a Dell-labeled Windows XP CD to install XP on an old IBM X24 computer and it worked like a charm. The X24 had its own XP registration number (I only needed the media to reinstall) so maybe that's why it works, but it should work even with the same registration number.

You need to buy a new copy of XP to install it on a the new laptop, because as noted, it is against the EULA to transfer the license off the Dell laptop.

For the record, we don't support software piracy of any kind here so let's limit conversation to legal things.

Are the drivers that are supplied with your laptop XP compatible? If they aren't you'd have to go searching or XP drivers all over the web. Trust me, you won't like it.
