I'm trying to decide if I really *need* Ultimate, and I see that the only feature missing in Home Premium (that is important to me) is Remote Desktop Connection. I use this to connect to my work PC over a VPN, so I have to have it. I was wondering, do they mean that there will be no RDC functionality at all, or just that other machines will not be able to connect to mine, while I will still be able to connect to others? I'm guessing the former. :(

You could just use 3rd party RDC programs such as UltraVNC and set up a VPN with Hamachi.

You will have a dumbed down remote connection. It will allow you to connect to other machines with your home premium, but other machines can not connect and take over you.

Listen to Calvin. Just use a free/opensource VNC server and client if you need remote connection. TightVNC, UltraVNC, all good. Also, a super polished and professional solution is NoMachine's NX: http://www.nomachine.com/

Don't know about Windows, but it's free (as in beer) for Linux, and worked awesome for me. It's tons better than VNC and Windows RDP combined.

Remember this is for his work computer. Not everyone has rights to install other software on their systems!

Well yeah, but same thing applies to RDP, doesn't it? You have to have privileges to enable it, plus open certain ports in the firewall for this to work. Plus, although I'm not sure, but isn't VNC a self-contained binary that doesn't require installation per se?

Ahh, gentlefolk, one and all, since it's a work computer, or at least will be connecting to a work computer, perhaps he should speak to the IT department at work first; they might be indifferent, but most IT departments I know do not look kindly on employees free-lancing their connections to the company computer system. I'm pretty sure that the OP doesn't want to come to the boss' attention as the guy who brought down the company network because he used a remote connection app that just happened to have serious "issues" with the network setup.

Our network accommodates RDC traffic, but only over a VPN tunnel. As a matter of fact, once the VPN tunnel is established, I can use whatever I want, VNC included. However, I use VNC to connect to Windows 2000 machines at work, and I find it a bit lacking. It's kind of laggy in that screen refreshes and such are often only triggered upon a keystroke or mouse click. For example, if I were to open up an IE window, I might have to click the mouse in the window for the contents of the first page to be displayed. It's strange - just feel kind of clumsy.

I don't see much need to be able to connect to and control my laptop from another machine, but I do need to connect to my workstation at my office from my laptop at home using RDC. It sounds like nizzy1115 is saying that Vista Home Premium allows that, correct?
