Hi guys, so here's the deal. I am running Server 2008 on my Home Server machine which I am going to be using to store all my music etc.
This server (in sig) did not come with a sound card so I bought the SIIG USB SoundWave 7.1 sound card from Walmart (which is pretty good btw) not too long after I got my server and then connected some logitech speakers to that...been working just fine.
Yes, so long story short I would like to Remote to my Server '08 box via my laptop and play my music over the LAN but the Remote connection disables the sound card. Of course this works fine when I log in to the Server directly but it's kind of a pain to have to pull out my wireless keyboard/mouse and sit down in front my HDTV just to do this. (as it's connected to my TV via VGA)
So when I open up RDC under the Local Resources tab, I have it set under the Audio setting to leave the sound on the remote machine. (meaning the Server) but it shows up my sound device as not installed. If I choose the play on this computer option that works fine but it's not what I want.
I've searched for a fix online for the past couple days on and off and haven't come up with any hits. It seems this was much easier done with Server 2003.
Anyone has any experience with this for Server '08? I've attached a print screen for your viewing pleasure.
Cookies for anyone who can help me resolve this issue.

Have you attempted to disable Audio Re-direction on the TS Client?
Options---->Local Resources Tab---->Remote audio---->Settings---->Click on Play on Remote Computer
HTH, -
Disable it on the TS Client? My laptop? Why would that matter? As it is, it's set as 'Not Configured' in the Local Group Policy. See attached!
And yes, I do have it set to Play on Remote Computer in RDC.
PS: I've even tried the /admin and /console trick by adding those switches to the Target Properties of the RDC app. to no avail.
And the Windows Audio services are set to Automatic and enabled on the Server....Attached Files:

By default the TS client v6 or later is to redirect audio to the client, and to make printers from the client available in the session.
Here is a good tutorial:

^^^ Tru, but surely there has to be a way to leave the sound on the remote machine. (Which is what I would like to accomplish)
M$ cannot be that ignorant. I hope this isn't another case like the no host USB option in Hyper V. -

On my Win7 machine the RDP (remote deskstop) client has this tab:
(see capture.jpg)
And when you click on the audio setings you get this dialog:
(see capture1.jpg)
Looks like it should do what you want.

I have those options as well Gary... from my post #3. -->
It's like having a turbo button, but when pressed nothing happens....
There has to be a fix. I'll keep searching!
Edit: Yep, that's what i'm saying. -

I just went back and re-read your OP. Are you saying that if you configure the Server to use the external audio card, it works fine from the server console, but once you RDP to the machine that card is disabled? If so it does indeed sound like the USB issue with Hyper V.
Try this: click the "More" button at the bottom of the settings screen. (See Capture.jpg below).
Then on the "Local Devices and Resources" tab and select the port and "other supported PnP devices". Yes, I know that is supposed to be for local devices only not ones on the server, like your audio card but...

One last thing to try. Go to the server and startup something that is producing audio thru the usb device. Now, without loging off the server go to the remote machine and login via RDP using the same credentials you used to login to the server in the first step. This should take over the already running session, rather than starting a new one. What happens then? Does the audio go silent or continue to play?

Tried them both...the latter boots me out; shuts off music that was playing.
From my latest google searches it seems it's another neglect of M$. I guess it's not a demanding feature. -

Well, in your search are you concentrating on the lack of audio or the lack of access to USB devices on the server? I think the latter is the real issue here, the audio would not be a problem if you were using a "real" sound card.
I wonder if a USB memory stick or USB connected hard drive on the server would be accessible via the remote machine?
Gary -
I am fairly certain the issue is with the RDC; As I've came across some pretty similar cases as mine in my search. And those posts basically led to a 'petition' to M$'. (Similar to the USB case with Hyper V)
I have like 3 USB HDDs connected to my server and access all Remotely without issue. I'll try my memory stick tomorrow but i'm sure it wouldn't be a problem. -

The original image you posted showed the audio dialog running on the server while viewed via RDC, right? If you are able to use a memory stick tomorrow, this would isolate the issue to sound on the remote machine via a usb sound card. I'll try to connect to my server tomorrow and see what sort of results I get.

^^^ Yah. And yah, my USB stick works, as I expected it to.
