I have a server to share file across my network. It’s hidden in a closet and I always used remote connection to do maintenance work on it. However, after upgrading it to Vista (just to see what would happen) I can’t establish remote connections anymore – not regularly anyways. Out of 10 tries, I might be able to connect once. For the other 9 times, it just gives me the message: “Windows can’t connect to the remote computer. Try connecting again. If the problem continues, contact the owner of the computer or your network administrator.” Has anyone encountered this before? Thanks

EDIT: I should mention that I also have trouble accessing some (not all) of the folders on the computer via network. It says I don't have the rights to view theme.

If it works from time to time, then something strange is going on, pinpointing it might be tough. As a general suggestion, try turning off firewalls of both machines and see if that improves things.

What OS are you running on the client side? If it's not Vista, did you upgrade to the newer version of remote access?

Hmm, it's working great for me. Is this occuring within your intranet? Or are you conecting externally via the internet through a VPN? I do both again without issue. One thing you might check are the logs on the server side the RRAS logs in particular.

No, I'm only trying to access in my local intranet.

Is there anything particular should I look for in the logs?

I have not done this in Vista but I did do some trouble shooting under Win2000. If I remember correctly it was possible to have the RRAS service produce a more verbose log and with it I was able to determine quite a bit about the connection process.

Sorry I don't have more specifics at hand. I'll look for some notes tomorrow.
