I am wondering if anyone tried using remote desktop within a virtual machine guest Windows XP (say on a Windows 7 host) to access another Windows XP (not virtual machine) in another network?

At home my desktop has Windows 7 which has XP mode (free XP VM)

Within the XP VM i run Cisco VPN so i can remote desktop into servers in my office.

Basically i just use XP mode to do my work stuff from home. Remote desktop works normally.

Is there a reason you can't just use an rdp client natively? That seems like a completely useless level of indirection for a performance loss coupled with difficulty.

The kind of rdp the OP wants to do works fine, but you've got to have the real and virtualized networks setup correctly.
