Can this be done by LogMeIn or GoToMyPC ?

    Which is better ?

Can somebody tell me in brief how this stuff works ? VPN ?

    How secure are they ?

What version of Windows is the desktop running? (I'm assuming it's Windows.)

If the machine you're connecting to (the "server" machine) has XP Pro, or Vista Business or Ultimate, then you can use Remote Desktop, which is built in to Windows. The client machine can run any edition of XP or Vista; they all have a client for Remote Desktop... it's just the server that needs to run certain editions. http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/mobility/getstarted/remoteintro.mspx

If not, then you may want to try VNC. I haven't used it, but it's free and I hear it's good.

I'm used to use LogMeIn and I think it's great.

I tried to setup VNC but I couldn't figure out how. Any idea?

    Thanks guys for ur replies...

Does remote desktop work with 2 different networks altogether ? If this works then it would be the best....

But its cost is around $199....expensive

I tried LogMeIn.....but user experience is not as good as windows remote desktop.....I looking for something of that quality...

I think the computers just need to be able to connect to each other one way or another, but you'll have to play around. This is what the page I linked says:
Confusing, but I think that's a yes, just type in the IP address. But you'll need to make holes in all the firewalls so the client can contact the server on whatever port it uses.

Really? I use logmein and it's been good to me. Remote Desktop is not that simple as logmein..u can view my thread under networking and wireless.

    That's what i'm saying!

Yes, while LogMeIn might be a little slower than RDP...there are a few reasons...

RDP is usually only used over the same network. Once you try going out of network, RDP gets more complicated. Also, once you have to connect from outside the network ALL remote control schemes are going to be slower.

LogMeIn is meant for out of network access...RDP is more for inside a network...so of course LMI "seems" slower.

    Anyway, back to this thread...

LogMeIn is free. GoToMyPC is not.

You'd better check with your University's IT department before you go doing anything like establishing an external remote connection with a University computer - they won't like it, not the least because you're opening up a potential security hole in the network, and if done without authorization, might subject you to sanctions. On the brighter side, however, they may also have a remoting infrastructure already in place - for example, Citrix - in which event it should be a simple matter of getting the necessary system permissions to use that remoting infrastructure.

Shyster's right... I got "busted" for running Hamachi (a virtual network client) and had to play stupid about it not to get reamed out. If the university's on board, the ease of use of LogMeIn cannot be beat.

-Windows RDP is faster, but a pain to get working across networks
-VNC is way more flexible, but the biggest pain in the butt to get setup and working
    -G2MPC costs too much
-All of the other ones I can think of are too expensive to think about (too expensive is obviously subjective but I hardly use anything but opensource freeware nowadays and haven't regretted it once)

I like LogMeIn, although it won't be as quick as the one on Windows, and LogMeIn has a free version that does the basics and can be accessed from almost anywhere, whether on your network or not.

Uh, why are we reviving threads that have been dead almost a year?
