Hmm, this is interesting. I don't think I've ever seen this before.

I will do some research on this.

Looks like you've manually installed/upgraded device drivers multiple times.

Have you tried removing the device & device driver as well as any 'ghost' devices and let the laptop rediscover things?

Beyond cosmetics, does the # cause you any pain?

I think you can manually rename it in Control Panel\Network and Internet\Network Connections. Windows, however, still remembers it was #3, so the next time you reinstall the network device, it will automatically name it "... #4".

To the OP, are you willing to take a risk here? I have had this numbering issue before, but it requires that you be able to view all devices. This means devices that are not connected and devices that are hidden.

    Here is a solution!!
Reset the numbering for new devices. Load regedit and go here

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\Network\{big long hex
    number}\Descriptions

There will be a few hex numbers after \Network\ but it'll be the one
with the "Descriptions" branch. Under this branch you'll see all the
numbering strings. Juts delete the ones you want to reset.

Then go back to Device Manger and select "Scan for Hardware Changes"

Follow the steps here to make device manager show you all hidden devices, including the ones that are not connected.

Device Manager does not display devices that are not connected to the Windows XP-based computer

Then go to device manager and show all hidden devices and uninstall the devices with numbers one at a time. This is the safest way to do it rather than going into the registry. Messing with the numbering in the registry will mess up the associated driver repository.

did you consider that driver sweeper might have been the cause of more problems that you are considering giving it credit for? It would have been nice to know about ALL of your problems at the beginning.

    sheesh

But it doesn't relate to driver sweeper.
It happened since I updated windows + optional drivers ;)

when asking for help with problems, ALWAYS tell people everything you have done to your machine.

driver sweeper and other 'clean up' utilities are imperfect and cause just as many problems as they purport to solve.

It seems you didn't still get me. I got this problem before using driver sweeper.
