Well I have been at this for nearly 3 hours. Im trying to remove the read only off my Rockstar Games Folder.

I have tried right clicking unticking on both that folder, folders in that folder and my Program Files (X86). I took owner ship of the folder and still no dice.

(My user is an admin user)

Moreover I went through CMD and checked that attributes and there was only A/S/H and no R for the folder. I tried +R to add it then removed it.

Any help would be great Thanks

Try go into Safe Mode and use Total Commander (trial version is just as good) to force the attribute changes.

    cheers ...

Did you need the read only off for a specific program inside that folder?
I know this sounds weird, but I've heard that you can use compatibility mode to make the change.

There is also a "take ownership" script that may fix the problem.

(scroll a little more than half way down for the direct link)

Did you try looking at the security tab?

Im looking to take ownership of most of the files in the program folder

I went through the security tab to take ownership, apparently that script doesn't solve the issue (later posts)

    Thanks for the post though

First take ownership of the folder/files and then change permissions to give yourself read+write access to it as well.

I think you tried that already though.

I hope you understand that any folder will show the "Read-only" box with a blue square inside, and that this has nothing to do with it being marked as read-only (which would be indicated by a check mark)? This will not affect your ability to access files in that folder in any way. Otherwise, as others have said, all you need to do is make sure that you have the appropriate permissions as set in the Security tab of the folder proeperties dialog.

Yup I understand that and I do have a blue square. Ironically, all the files are either not allowing me to save them after an edit as it is read only, or after I edit, it reverts the changes.

I have had problems editing files before and found that if I open the editing program (notepad, wordpad) with "Run as Administrator", then, browse to the file I want to edit from within the program I can perform the edit and save the file regardless of the permission.

Can't hurt to give it a try.

and you should have just set permissions to "users" to read/write. works everytime.

there, click on users, then edit, confirm uac, check everything to allow, press okay, and it propagates.

if it doesn't propagate trough all files and subfolders, go to advanced (the lower button). there, edit, again, the users by adding all functionality. then check the in the lower part "change for all files and subfolders". press okay and wait till done.

I'm sure he knows all about setting permissions; since it's Rockstar games he's talking about, that makes me think it's GTA4. I wonder if this is a result of their stupid Securom protection (which more or less integrates itself as part of the OS as far as I know) being overzealous and preventing any type of change to the game's files whatsoever.

Tried and failed as stated in previous posts but thanks.

Its actually GTA SA that I was initially trying to access but every one of my folders within the Program Files folder had the issue.

Make sure you seize ownership from the root GTA folder. Sometimes, files inherit their read only flags from lower level folders.

it should work. show screenshots on the folder you try to set, both permissions per se (for the 'users'), and in the advanced edits (again, for the 'users').
