It takes an icon space and some people like their desktop clean :p

I can't help you there, but I've seen it been done.

    Kinda interested as well

I'm not sure if this works for everyone, but I know that on my computer (Windows XP Home) I can right click on my desktop>"Arrange Icons By">then uncheck "Show Desktop Icons."

right click on desktop > arrange icons by > show desktop icons

(assuming you want nothing on the desktop)
