So I'm going to be installing an SSD into my computer instead of the turtle that's already in there and I have some confusion about installing Windows 8 to the SSD. I don't want to do a clean install, I want to install it like it came and just remove the bloat. From what I understand I have to create a recovery drive on a USB, switch the drives, and then re-install Windows 8 by booting into the USB. I know that the serial key is stored in the BIOS and not on the OS, but won't the key still be activated on the Windows 8 that's on my HDD? Do I have to somehow de-activate the key from the HDD before I make the switch?

Since the BIOS has the key, and the assumption is that only *that* computer has *that* key, any OEM-compatible Win8 that is installed on it will activate.

Hi Sykton, sorry to buzz in here as well, I just happened to see this thread.
That procedure you describe of using Recovery to backup the factory image to a bootable USB stick, and using that stick to build the SSD after swapping it in, is specific to Samsung laptops and their Recovery solution. Other types of laptops have different procedures.
In fact, the only reason the Samsungs need specific procedures like this, is because it ensures that the Recovery works on the new drive -- which it won't if you clone with 3rd party tools.
As SubZero said, your Product Key will be the same, regardless of how you install Windows. If you use Recovery, it's not even a new installation, but just a factory restore of the original installation. -

Unfortunately no. You can back up the factory image to any drive, but you have to use a USB stick in order to make it bootable. And that's what includes all the Recovery software with the backup.
We discuss that extensively over in the Samsung Owners Lounge thread. I cannot count the number of times I've answered this for members who want to avoid buying a 32GB USB stick.
If you have an external enclosure, you do have an alternative, using the Disk Copy feature in Recovery. Again, search that Owners Lounge thread. I'm on my phone now (trying to fall asleep) otherwise I'd look it up for you. -

No worries, it was my choice to respond. -
Replacing out-of-box hard drive with SSD, how to re-install Windows 8? (Not a clean install)
