Hey guys, I am going to purchase a laptop this December from Portable One as a Christmas Gift to myself. A Sony Vaio SZ680 with the following specs.
Intel® Core Duo 2 Processor T7700 2.4GHz 4MB
13.3" WXGA LED Backlit XBRITE LCD (1280 x 800)
4GB (2 x 2GB) DDR2 Memory
NVIDIA® GeForce Go 8400GS & Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator X3100
160GB w/256MB Flash Memory/5400rpm
Dual Layer DVD±RW Optical Drive
I would like to install FREE software that will keep Windows Vista up and running without sacrificing speed and performance. I know there are a lot of threads about this. But I would really appreciate if you would answer mine.

1. AVG or Avast are both great options.
2. don't know
3. I just use the built-in Windows Firewall.
4. CCleaner perhaps.
5. Try different gadgets yourself. A great one that shows RAM and processor usage is this: http://gallery.live.com/liveitemdetail.aspx?li=f5b13626-b266-4334-b2e5-157bd66ca5af&pl=1&bt=1
6.
You can check the spec of your laptop through device manager and Windows Experience rating. -

SPYWARE
are adaware and spybot s&d resource hogging?
Not really, but the best out there right now seems to be Spyware Doctor Free. It's part of the Google Pack-pack.google.com
FIREWALL
I like Comodo, but others like ZoneAlarm, etc.
REGISTRY CLEANER/REPAIR
CCleaner
SIDEBAR GADGET
I like the performance gadget-measures CPU and Memory load
As for the other stuff, I've got no clue -

Me too. It's a very good program so i hope it'll only get better instead of worse once it gets ported to vista.

You've already seen most of what I'd have suggested, but to go along with your antispyware, I recommend you at least take a look at SpywareBlaster. It won't "clean" your machine, but really helps to keep malware from ever setting up camp on your machine. And it does so without all the damn popup warnings, bells, whistles, sirens, etc, which other apps use.

I think instead of installing that app, he could just use the FF extension Noscript like me. I use it to keep malware from seeping into my pages on the web as to prevent it a step before spyware blaster has to get involved.

Comodo or Zone Alarm aren't resource hogging?
-
Neither are resource hogs but some people say comodo takes up less resources than za. It's just what i heard.
-
how bout a disk defrag program which isn't a rsource hog
-
Auslogics disk defrag like i mentioned. It's all in my previous post on the first page.
-
I like Sunbelt Personal Firewall myself, never found it to be resource hogging (20M of Ram total).
Resource Hogging "Free" Software, definetly a NO NO
