I use windows 10. Got message that says

Restart and update to stay in support

Support for the windows 10 april 2018 update ends in november 2019. Restart to install a supporrted version of windows

    Pick a time
    restart tonight
    restart now

Do you all just restart now? Is it possible to click the arrow on the upper right corner of the message to hide this message? But if i do this, then next time i will get the same message?

If i pick a time, it automatically updates it at that time regardness of what im doing?

Should i just restart now and let it update? Any issues with it going wrong when its updating? Im always hesistant when doing a windows 10 update.

I don't know which Build you are on? If you got that message then you'll probably get the latest version which is Build 1903. That's Microsoft's new policy on Feature Updates which is 18 months after the oldest Build is no longer supported. So in theory after Build 1909 is released, Build 1903 will be supported for 18 months. If you have not updated after support ends you will have to update to the most current Build at that time.

You could try and defer which is around 180 days.

You could also stop the Windows Update task in Computer Mgmt, then delete the sub folder SoftwareDistribution in the Windows folder c:\windows\SoftwareDistribution. If you get the error message to try and delete the folder again is because Windows Update restarted again, so you'll have to stop it again. That will make that message go away until Windows Update restarts again.

Word to the wise, Windows is now a service just like Linux and macOS. As such MS will bully you until you say Uncle. If you're not concerned with security updates then keep avoiding the newer Windows 10 Build.

How i know which build im on? I think the last time i did a windows 10 update was around april 2018 or so.

So right now i just click on the arrow and closed it. But im sure this message will pop up sometime later right? That april 2018 update, i recall i delayed it so much by closing it. But then one time it automatically updated itself.

Do i need to do this update or not? If so, i will do it. If not, then keep delaying it? My concern is update causes my computer issue like it bricking or something... im always hesistant of a windows 10 update.

Right click on the start button, click on SYSTEM, then look all the way down on the page. It will say Windows Specifications: It will display the Version number, followed by the Build number.

My Windows 10 Pro reads Version: 1903 and Build number 18362.239

    settings
    help

I'm referring to the "advanced context menu" which happened with Windows 8.1 and Windows 10. If you right click on the Windows flag logo, lower left corner of the screen that's the Start button i'm referring too.

You can also "type" winver in the Command Prompt and it will popup a window displaying the same information.

Okay im not sure how to do this part.

But would you say updating it is fine? I get this message everyday now. I keep on clicking remind me next time. I know a while back i did this everyday but eventually, it updated itself.

Can anyone tell me how long this updating process took? Like expect it to be 15 minutes? 30 minutes? 1 hour? I want to know before i do this. Has anyone had their laptop go bad from this? That is my main concern when i do updates like this.

Then you should contact MS support about your issue then. Has anyone...this is so general that not all laptops are the same nor the same model. The updates are based on each setup no one setup is the same. Are you really asking for help or just Trolling here.

If your seeing that, you may be using Openshell, Classicshell, or similar replacement start menu.
You have to hold shift and right click on the start button to get to system menu.
There is no easy way to block windows updating without going to advanced tweaking.
If your getting that message you must be on version 1803 (yy/mm) or earlier. Eventually MS will force the update.
since the option says "restart now", that means the update files have already been downloaded and are waiting to install.

The best option is to set windows to delay updates as long as possible. You don't want to be one of those people that are testing MS updates as soon as they come out.

    Info on delaying updates:
    https://www.ghacks.net/2018/09/27/how-to-delay-feature-updates-in-windows-10/
It's also a good idea to change your network properties to a metered connection to defer update downloading.

If your worried about the update, do a system image first using Macrium or Clonezilla.

Hi i took a look at that link you posted. But is the 2nd option to do version 1809 good? That seems pretty dangerous because it doesn't seem like something most ppl do?

It mentions to keep using the current version if you like it. I do like it. But has anyone here not updated the windows 10 update last year though? Or you eventually have to update it?

Does anyone know how long before it does not let you click on remind me later? I must have clicked remind me later for more than 10 days now. The last thing i want is if it does this update, while im busying doing something.

Last year when i did that update, im not sure if it updated because clicking remind me later didn't work anymore... or if i clicked on a certain time to do it... and then when it was that time, i couldn't click remind me at another time.

So you all agree just update it next chance i get when im not busy on it? Also, is there a way to do this update without having to wait for the update? I ask this because everyday that i get this message, sometimes it happens early on... other times a bit later on. Its not like it always shows up at say 2pm etc. Thanks.

I posted in the xps 15 9550 thread and one person mentioned to just do the update and not be concerned. They said most ppl don't have issues with the update. So why do so much ppl seem to be against this update?

    I did the update.

    Now i see message says

    Windows preparing...

Now the screen goes to my windows 10 locked screen. Thus the one where i click on it and then have to enter my windows 10 password.

I then typed in my password and then i get his error message that says

My classic shell is not compatible or something like that with aero 8.1? I then clicked retry and it didn't work a few times. Then i just closed it.

So now my laptop is fully updated?

What i find strange is my 250gb ssd hard drive before this update was around 29gb free of 232gb. Now it shows 39gb free of 231gb?

So is there anything else i have to do? I thought there was a 3rd process in this? Thus the percentage to 100%... i read its suppose to happen 3 times?

Also it downloaded microsoft edge for me... well its on my desktop icon now... that is normal?

I shut down laptop. Then turned it on again.

I had to enter my bitlocker pin, then my windows 10 password.

    I get these 2 messages

    Red X... dwm.exe

Aero Glass for win8.1+ incompatibility issue

Aero glass does not know how to hook your version of dwm (0xFF7)

You should download appropriate symbols package for your operating system from microsoft website and press retry button.

When i click retry, it doesn't work. So i have to click cancel to get rid of this message.

There is also message that shows up a bit after that

    Classic Start Menu

Classic shell needs to configure itself for the new operating system. When i click Okay for this.

    I get Red message

    User Account Control
This app has been blocked for your protection.

An administrator has blocked you from running this app. For more info, contact the admin.

    ClassicStartMenu.exe
    Publisher: Unknown
File origin: hard drive on the computer
    Program location c:/program files/class shell/classstartmenu.exe" -upgrade

The only option here i can click is close and then it closes

So as of now, did my windows update correctly? It does show im using the latest version of windows. But what about these 2 messages?

And why do i now have more gb free than earlier? 29gb free of 232gb total but now 38gb free of 231gb? Doesn't this update use 7gb? So shouldn't i have like 22gb free instead? Why did the total 232gb change to 231gb now?
