This problem started about one month ago. After restarting the computer, windows shuts down properly but instead or restarting it displays a black screen with some minor hdd activity (hdd light blinks every 2 secs basically).

And while i was typing this it hit me.... Is it possible to be a HDD issue ?

Maybe it is time your HDD want to say good bye to you.
    Try this, http://www.hdtune.com/
    Guide and D/L is there.
HD tune is a software that to detect and observe, investigate, analysis your HDD.

You have AlienWare. That is awesome brand. Due to the brand, I guess it is a software problem more than a hardware.

Then, it might be software problem?
Anyway, do you check your BIOS? Make sure everything boot in a correct sequence.
You can try a no brainer method, that is a reinstallation of Windows and CLEAN all your HDD. (this method is like no clue but it helps sometime)

Didnt change anything in the bios nor have i installed any new softwares (apart from windows updates) for a few months now :p Which makes things a bit more complicated.

Since its really hard to find the problem i guess i have to wait for Win 7 to come out. After the format im going to know if its a hardware or software related :p
