I have a Dell Inspiron 1520. I have the NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT graphics card, 2GB of RAM and a Core 2 Duo 1.8 GHz processor. The laptop runs very fast and I have no problems with it.

However, once in awhile, if I right click anything anywhere and I move my cursor over the options in the right-click menu, the options become blacked out. It seems like it has something to do with the options not being highlighted correctly.

I have no idea what is causing this problem. Has anyone else experienced this? Does anyone have any advice at all for me?

    Thanks.

Hello ATR 90. I have the exact same specced laptop as you and had a similar problem. Except mine was where when you highlighted anything on the right click menu and then clicked off the highlight would remain on the screen (very annoying. Refreshing didn't work. Locking and unlocking didn't work. Sleeping and hibernating didn't work either). I got mad until it fixed itself. I'm really not sure what to say to your problem. I had the stock drivers until a few days after the problem fixed itself and windows update gave me an update to the NVidia drivers. So I guess all I can say is hang in there for a couple days and maybe it will fix itself. You could also try updating your NVidia Control Panel and checking the settings.

    Thanks.

My problem is nowhere near as bad as yours sounded.

As soon as I right click again, it fixes itself.

Hmmm...I can't really think what it is. Try updating drivers from Dell and restart....that's all I can think of now. Also, go into your screen properties in both Windows and the Nvidia Control Panel and set it to a different resolution and then back to the one you have right now. That might shake up the screen a bit to where it works...I don't know. It's worth a shot...

Could you try to lower hardware acceleration?

This doesn't happen that often. I'm right clicking now and it works fine. It's just once in awhile, it will happen.

I also found that it seems to occur most often with Windows Live Messenger. I'm noticing now that if I have Windows Live Messenger maximized and I right click its tab on the taskbar, the right click menu shows up for a split second and disappears. The only way it will actually stay is if I hold the right click button for about a second before letting it go. Again, this latest problem is only happening with Windows Live Messenger.

I also noticed that with Windows Live Messenger, if I maximize anything from it, be it a conversation or the main contact list page, it will maximize as a black screen. I would have to re-maximize it and then it will be fine.

Probably a coding error with Windows Live Messenger...that sucks....hopefully an update will fix it. You could try contacting MS, but I doubt they'll do anything about it...

Come to think of it, since the first day I got my laptop, whenever I exit Windows Live Messenger, the icon in the taskbar does not disappear until I hover my cursor over it. Is that normal?
