Last night changed FX theme and then turned off computer. Upon reboot I get "a default profile has been loaded" with a very basic desktop with all shortcuts missing. All files are still on the computer. Can't system restore because it was not set up (have never had a computer with that off and didn't think to check). I researched the internet and found one thread very similar but wasn't resolved. Anyone have any info? I am trying to get ahold of Dell but their phones keep disconnecting after about 10 minutes of waiting. I'd hope that I don't have to do a fresh install and go through the process of reinstalling everything. I'm not a big fan of dumping a ton of files from backup back to the computer on a fresh install of the OS.

The reference system is R2 with Windows 7 but anyone with a computer with windows 7 could be a help to me on this. Thanks.

well hopefully i can get a resolution through the forums because dell/aw support has no clue what to do and IF they can find a resolution I am being charged 30 bucks because it's "beyond the scope of support and software related"

I've seen cases of this on multiple systems before, not just Alienware. This is more of a Windows issue - could be a virus, disk errors, etc.

Review this and see if it helps.

A temporary profile is loaded after you log on to a Windows Vista-based system

*Make a backup of that registry key before changing it...

If this does not help, your next step is to respawn the system and start again with installing, etc.

Moving to windows forum for better exposure.

The following worked for me when I had a similar problem:
Source: Windows 7 starting with a temporary profile
