So I have a Panasonic 47'' 1080i CRT HDTV. When I se a svideo cable to hook it up to my laptop, windows only gives me 800x600 & 1024x768 as available resolution and the TV is only black and white.

So I need to use the HDMI out of it's just a misconfiguration?

The s-video out is only 720 X 480 (NTSC) or 576 (PAL) so either resolution is higher than the output. If you have HDMI available you will get full HD resolution at the highest progressive resolution your TV has. As to the Black and White, most likely the cable or a PAL - NTSC conflict. Test the cable with a DVD player and check that the laptop and TV are both NTSC or PAL.

Not unless your video chip supports interlaced output. Most (all?) don't.
