I'm curious if there is any software that upconverts the resolution of an SD avi to the resolution of my monitor. When going full screen with SD content, it is obvious there is no algorithm running to sharpen the upscale, such as is done with the PS3. Does anybody know of any software that will interpolate SD to HD?

If you are using an ATi or nVidia card and running through something like PowerDVD or most other DVD players you can go and fiddle with the edge enhancement and de-noise settings to improve the image quality.

The graphics card itself will upscale to fit your monitor (or you would just get a small video square in the middle of the screen).

I run an ATi HD4670 card in my HTPC, this does upscale DVD's very well and adding a slight bit of edge enhancement in the drivers gives a crisp clean image. I do have to turn down noise reduction to its lowest level or the image looks blurred.

If you want to do stuff with software then the only thing I know that will do upscaling is ffdshow but that is just a codec with tweakable settings, it can also bring some systems to their knees when applying a lot of post processing as its all done through software.
