Hi, I'm getting a new drive, that will serve as my new Op system WinX /Linux SSD and I want to use this chance to virus/malware scan my old data and os drives from it. I have no particular reason to think they are infected, its just precautionary. I wanted to know if there was an easy safe way to accomplish this without risking infecting the new drive. Could I just plug in my old drive into the mSATA orSata port and scan it with WinDefender or similiar program would that be safe?

If you have no need for the old drive just wipe it clean that will remove anything on there. On reformatting I use the O/S to wipe clean the drive and reformat and reinstall the new O/S that will insure nothing remains.
