Hi, hope this is the right section :(

I have a brand new laptop and almost every time I boot it up it starts scanning and repairing drive C stuck at 100%. I can only remove the battery and then power it up again (which it does without any problem).

I have done all I could to see if there was a problem with the hd but found nothing.

What should I do? Any ideas?

    Thanks !

how old is the machine (specs usually help when asking complete strangers to help you troubleshoot), and how old is the windows installation?

is there anything actually wrong aside from a hung CHKDSK at each boot? is CHKDSK running after POST but before windows boots, or when windows boots? if the latter -- does the entire machine freeze and that's why you're pulling the battery to restart it? and how else have you checked for hard drive corruption? sorry about twenty questions, but i'm trying to make sense of your issue. a windows reinstallation would resolve whatever issue you're experiencing with 99.9% certainty, but that may not be necessary.

Hi, sorry I need some clarifications but THANKS for taking the time to help me

    1.
is there anything actually wrong aside from a hung CHKDSK at each boot?

I cannot find any. And also I have to say that it doesn't happen every time. I would say every 2/3 boots.

    2.
is CHKDSK running after POST but before windows boots, or when windows boots?

I am not sure I understand the question but if I do, I do not see windows. So I am guessing it's happening BEFORE windows boots

    3.
if the latter -- does the entire machine freeze and that's why you're pulling the battery to restart it?

It happens before and I pull the battery because nothing else works. I mean: I can press any key and nothing happens. I do not know what else to do :(

    4.
and how else have you checked for hard drive corruption?

I am using Glary utilities to maintain my laptop but if I should use something else please tell me.

    Thanks again

If you know what brand Hard Drive you have go to the manufacturer's site, and download any available tools that run outside of windows. (For instance Seatools for DOS with Seagate drives). You will create a bootable USB drive or CD after downoloading. Then run a quick test. If that passes a long test maybe needed.

NOTE I would attempt to backup any needed data files on the hard drive before running any other diagnostics.
JUST curious can you boot into save mode by pressing F8 after the BIOS loads (AKA posting)?
Do you have a conventional hard drive or SSD (solid state drive)?

mmmm do you really think it's the hd? I see way too many complaints on the web about the same issue. Could it not be software (sorry I may have said something stupid...)

Anyways F8 doesn't work. No key can be pressed :( ... but how can I press F8 in win 8 anyways? Just in case I am not doing it right ...

Also, I have come across this. What do you think?

Who the heck ever told you to use that program? It probably dorked your registry.

Hi, I don't think so. I have always used glary utilities since windows xp days and I was using it on this with this machine way before I had this problem.

So the problem is in the registry? If so it should be fixable right? How do I go about fixing it? And what anybody else thinks about the fix I had found on the internet? Worth a try?

You say your laptop is only 3 months old. You should have a guarantee from the manufacturer or the place you bought it from. Maybe they can fix it. In your error report printout there are lots of Glary index errors. I don't know what those mean. Can you contact Glary and ask them? Also those javascript errors look fishy. Is something running in the background that uses javascript? I know some virus's do. And have you looked at those image files with the extension of png? Those look fishy also. Glary certainly doesn't like them.

And if all else fails then you will have to do a format and reinstall of your OS. Backup you data if you can, first.

all that registry edit does is disable CHKDSK/autocheck of a C: drive at startup. (you can achieve the same result by running "chkntfs /X [drive letter]:" in a command prompt.) see this link for more information on disabling CHKSDK. there's something else going on here though that would leave me personally unsettled about just opting for a band-aid.

I would like to try and edit the registry:

I have opened the registry and (following the suggestion from the thread above I have looked at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager) the reg key is:

    autocheck autochk *

    How should I change it?

Sorry it may be a simple question but I would like to avoid to screw up

    Can anyone help?

And also, since we are talking about the registry, if anything goes wrong how do I reload the registry backup I have just made?

Thanks for your time ! Much appreciated.

it's in the link i posted, the relevant portion of which reads: "The default value of the key is autocheck autochk *. '*' means every drive is checked for consistency. Just add /K:C at the end before '*.' /K switch will disable autocheck on C: drive at Windows startup." ergo, "autocheck autochk /k:C *" will disable CHKDSK on a drive lettered 'C.'

again, this will merely stop CHKDSK from running at boot -- but you're best advised to troubleshoot the actual issue. you could run "sfc /scannow" and then run CHKDSK again if system file checker completes successfully. there's actually a lot of troubleshooting you could do. or you could just reinstall windows altogether, which would definitely resolve your issue (so long as it's not a dying HD or other faulty hardware) but can be a tedious process.

no worries. if your OS drive/partition is lettered "C:" then yes, that's correct.

if your laptop from the beginning was working well, why don't you restore it to a point where you bought it. I don't mean a fresh install but restoring to a different date/time.
Do you let chkdsk to finish it works? I beleive there is somewhere you have decided to run this command, and thats why it keeps running, try to uninstall any programs like Glary utilities that might start this task.

Otherwise your laptop is still covered by warranty so you can deliver it and let them sort it out.

Hi and thanks to all of you for your help. I have really appreciated it !!!

In one of the threads there was a guy that suggested to do a "disk cleanup" (from admin tools) I did that (took hours....) and all is working fine now, It's been 2 days and no more issue .... let's cross fingers :)

Thanks again to you all :)
