Sorry to resurrect an old topic, but I was reading through this thread ( http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=106326), and I had a couple more suggestions and a questions.

Firstly, I found this tiny little screensaver for dimming the screen, DimSaver, which wasn't mentioned in the original thread: http://www.donationcoder.com/Software/Skrommel/index.html#DimSaver

But, as was mentioned in the original thread, I don't know if DimSaver will actually conserve power by affecting the hardware, like turning off the backlight.

So, a second suggestion would be using something like Screen Launcher (Which I found at http://www.bartdart.com) which lets you run any program as a screensaver, and have it launch a program that turns off your laptop's backlight. Unfortunately, I have not yet found a program that toggles the backlight, but maybe someone else will have better luck.
