Ive set then option in power managemnent to do nothing but im almost certain that normally it turns off the screen no matter what... im using newest nvidia laptop drivers, they really shouldnt have this issue..
any help appreciated.. thanks

. What is your machine brand/model?
. Check and make sure that the switch between the lcd and the casing still works; use a flat toothpick and verifiy it

well it works in ubuntu.. its a zepto nexus

read this thread, especially the last post and see if it does pertain to your issue or not

update all the drivers . restart. redo the power settings. it should work. if not call the manufacturer

It's the same for my notebook too actually. Previously when I used Vista, it'd automaticly turn off the backlight, but under XP it doesn't do so.
Not really a big deal to me because I can manually switch off my backlighting before I close it. -
Right click on your plug icon and go to advanced to see how it is set up.
-
It says 'Do Nothing'.
We want the computer to remain on, but turn off the backlighting. -
No one can help me with this?
-
Change the configuration from "Do nothing" to whatever option is available to turn off the screen when the lid is shut.
-
There is no such thing. Only Do nothing, sleep and shut down. The problem is that the screen should turn off but the pc should still remain on. I suggest to download a program that turns off the screen for you, and do that before closing the lid.
-
I found one program (BattStat) that can turn off the monitor just fine, all the others turned it off then it came back on a sec after without i did anything.. altho the one that works has this thing that when i touch the mouse it shows the screen again.... so annoying
-
Are you quite sure the screen remains turned on when you close the lid? How so? If so, then it's most likely a physical problem with the notebook itself, as (if I recall correctly) there should be a switch that gets opened when the lid is closed that cuts off the power to the backlight - that's the way it works on my 6 y.o. _Sony VAIO (just tried it to make sure and, yup, that's the way it works).
-
It remains on i can see it also because then the manufactors logo on the back are lit up.. it only happens in xp
-
Without being able to physically inspect the laptop, I would say that that must be one of the _Vista-specific twists that the manufacturer added, because as far as I know, with XP turning off the backlight is accomplished via a mechanical switch, not via software control. As such, you'll just have to revert to _Vista if you want the light to go out when you close the lid.
-
Yeah i guess youre right.. Its a Vista laptop (well they made xp drivers) but i guess thats just simply how it is
-
Been through this before, I forget which file is corrupted but basically XP goes awry and there is no fix except adding a shortcut that cuts the display when u click on it. If you want the display to turn off when you close the lid, you'll have to reinstall XP. Yes it sucks, but I spent a week researching it and there is no solution.

Thanks for the reply but it isnt the XP install because i've formatted 5 times since i discovered this.

@RebDK:
What is the make and model of the computer in question? -
Zepto Nexus A15.. Zepto is not a company that tend to fix that and i hardly doubt they have any fix lol
-
Fair enough, I don't know much of that company; however, if the system used to turn the backlight off originally, it's possible that they wrote a proprietary power-control applet that you might be able to find and give a try. I did a quickie google about the issue in regard to _HPs, and there seems to be just such a setup in the _HP power control system. It could also be part of the GPU control panel, is your GPU intel integrated, NVidia discrete, or ATi discrete?
-
It's nVidia.. Im gonna ask Zepto next time i can.. I prefer their live support because you rarely get email answer from the idiots.
-
Well, I just took a quick tour through the User Guide for the Nexus A15, and it would appear that there is a feature in the power management controls that will allow the system to shut off the backlight on the lcd. The clue was this passage (from page 38):
That being said, I'm not sure where all of the power management utilities would be on the Zepto, as those are frequently proprietary to each manufacturer.
It's possible that there's a BIOS setting that might be involved, because the discussion of the available BIOS options in the User Guide seems to suggest (without actually saying so) that some of the power management features can be set from within the BIOS. You might try going into the BIOS configuration/setup and checking to see if there's any option in there that appears to affect how the backlight is handled.
EDIT: I just poked around in the Zepto ftp server a bit more, and under the _Vista folder for the A15, there appears to be something called the Mobile Utilities that may have a bearing on being able to properly set the power management features. The folder for 32-bit _Vista is located in this folder on the ftp server.
However, this same utility does not show up in the XP folder, which suggests to me that it is not capable of running under XP. If that's the case, and if that utility is how the backlight is turned off and on under _Vista, than odds are you're going to have troubles being able to shut the backlight off under XP. -
Man thanks for being so helpful!
Well.. I guess its stupid to use XP then, where most of the time i will be having the backlight on because it doesnt turn off?
I looked in the BIOS and its extremely limited, theres barely anyting useful..
I have Zepto Mobile Utilities.. Its true it isnt really supported for XP but the newest Vista32 version works ok.. Not that good tho its actually bit of a pain in the a*s but yeah.
Do you recommend me just to use Vista? It is a vista laptop after all :\
