Despite the fact I have it turned off, when I go to search it always sticks to indexed locations. I then have to flick a few options which is tedious. Is there any way to change the default settings?

First, knowing How to Search in Vista can amke a huge difference.
Also, you can Save Searches.
I do not know of any way to change the default for the checkbox to include non-indexed locations. -
I agree that it ought to let you change the default.
But... this is sort of a workaround...
Double-click "Computer" and use the search box in that window. The search will be on all your drives.
If you'd rather not use the mouse, then Win-E plus 3 tabs and start typing is the best I can come up with.
EDIT: Win-E plus F3 and start typing will also do the trick (or Win-E plus Ctrl-F) but it does open up two windows.
If you want to search just a particular drive or directory, open that directory's window in Explorer and use the search box in that window. If you put a shortcut to that drive or directory on the desktop, then you can right-click it, select Properties, and assign it a shortcut key for quick keyboard access.
Search without indexing
