First, I apologize if this is in the wrong thread, but it directly involves selling a laptop so I thought i'd post here.

I have a very new Dell Inspiron E1705, when I started school I needed something more portable so I upgraded. Now I want to sell the Dell but i'm afraid of identity theft. Any tips or programs to clean the hard drive?

I am looking for something that won't remove Windows XP, or valuable software like Word, things like that.

I think you should be fine just by running Dell's system restore that will wipe out your system. If you're really paranoid look up applications that do "secure erase", there are quite a few of these. All you need to do is to make it difficult enough for others to retrieve your info. I doubt that people will be buying your system to steal your info, so system restore should be just fine. That should thwart any casual efforts to obtain your info.
